CBS News investigation reveals the tactical operations center lacked drone protection and had no warning sirens — as over 60 Americans were wounded in the deadliest attack on US forces since the war began

New Delhi, March 12, 2026 — A devastating Iranian drone strike on a US military facility in Kuwait during the opening hours of the regional war killed six Army Reserve soldiers and injured far more American personnel than the Pentagon initially disclosed, CBS News reported.

The strike, which occurred within the first 48 hours of hostilities as Iran unleashed waves of drones and missiles at US military installations across the Middle East, targeted a tactical operations center, added the US-based broadcaster.

Satellite imagery reviewed by CBS News shows the dramatic before-and-after of the direct hit. CBS News Senior National Correspondent Charlie D’Agata reported that more than 60 service members were injured — a figure significantly higher than what was originally made public. “Around 30 remained hospitalized as of Tuesday, suffering traumatic brain injuries and shrapnel wounds,” he added.

Many were airlifted to a US military hospital in Germany, where more than 100 American medical personnel worked to treat them, added the broadcaster.

The investigation raises troubling questions about the preparedness of the facility at the time of the attack. According to D’Agata: “The facility was a double-wide trailer that had little protection against drones. There were also no warning sirens heard before the strike.”

One source told CBS News bluntly: “We basically had no drone defeat capability.”

The disclosure puts Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in a difficult position. He had publicly insisted the facility was fortified, describing the deadly hit as an anomaly — what he called a “squirter” that slipped through defences.

Critics say that framing contradicts the on-the-ground accounts gathered by CBS News.

“The weapon responsible was Iran’s Shaheed drone — a cheap but lethal unmanned aerial vehicle that Tehran has produced and deployed in the thousands. Despite their low cost, the drones have proven capable of penetrating military perimeters and causing mass casualties,” added the broadcaster.

US officials were quoted by CBS News, saying that “air defence protocols are now under urgent review, with particular focus on countering low-flying drone threats at forward operating positions.”

“The attack remains the deadliest strike against American forces since the conflict began, and thousands of military families across the United States are now awaiting word on loved ones still deployed across the region,” added CBS News.
