Secret Service acts swiftly as chaos erupts at Washington Hilton; Trump releases statement praising law enforcement response

New Delhi, April 26, 2026 — Donald Trump was rushed out of the high-profile White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after loud bangs—believed to be gunfire—triggered panic among attendees, forcing hundreds to take cover under tables as armed security personnel stormed the venue.

The dramatic incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where nearly 2,600 guests—including politicians, journalists, and celebrities—had gathered for the annual black-tie event often dubbed “nerd prom.”

In an official statement and subsequent remarks, Trump confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody and praised the swift response of security forces.

“A man charged at a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service… they acted very quickly,” Trump said, adding: “The shooter has been apprehended… Secret Service and law enforcement really did a great job.”

He added that footage of the attack had been released “for purposes of transparency and clarity,” describing the assailant as someone who “attacked our Constitution.”

Trump also revealed that one officer was shot at close range but survived due to protective gear. “One officer was shot… from very close distance with a very powerful gun. The vest did the job… I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great,” he said.

Panic Inside the Ballroom

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as the incident unfolded. Guests reported hearing loud crashing noises followed by urgent shouts of “Get down!”

Journalist Indrani Basu recounted that attendees initially mistook the sound for breaking glass before being urged to take cover. Within seconds, people were crawling under tables as heavily armed agents entered the hall.

Wolf Blitzer, who was present at the venue, said he was only a few feet away from the attacker. “He starts shooting… I happened to have been a few feet away from him… it was very, very scary. But I’m okay now,” Baker added.

Another attendee, Rachel Leingang of The Guardian, described how security forces quickly evacuated the ballroom while sirens and helicopters filled the night sky outside.

The United States Secret Service responded within moments, neutralising the threat and securing the area. A White House aide later confirmed that the president was safe and had been moved out as a precaution.

Initial reports suggested that the gunman was armed with multiple weapons and attempted to breach a security checkpoint before being subdued.

Top US lawmakers reacted swiftly on social media, expressing relief at the president’s safety and praising law enforcement. Chuck Schumer said he was “closely monitoring the unfolding situation” and was grateful for the quick response.

Rand Paul thanked God that attendees were safe. Nancy Mace urged Americans to “pray for President Trump and for our country.”

A Night Meant for Press Freedom Turns Chaotic

The Correspondents’ Dinner, traditionally a celebration of press freedom and political satire, took a grim turn. This year marked Trump’s first attendance at the event, where he was expected to deliver remarks.

Despite the disruption, Trump signalled resilience: “I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’… but will entirely be guided by law enforcement.”

Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances behind the attack, even as security agencies review protocols for high-profile public events in the US capital.
