US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and conveyed President Donald Trump’s invitation for a White House visit. The meeting came amid evolving US immigration policies, energy concerns and renewed efforts to strengthen India-US ties.
New Delhi, May 23, 2026 — US Secretary of the State Marco Rubio held extensive deliberations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. Rubio handed over US President Donald Trump’s invitation to Modi to visit the White House at an earliest occasion.
India is according an enhanced significance to Rubio’s India visit. In Kolkata, Rubio visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, which was founded by Mother Teresa. The roads seemed exclusively reserved for the cavalcade of Rubio.
In New Delhi, Rubio straightaway called on the Prime Minister. Union Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National security Advisor Ajit Doval were present during the Rubio-Modi meeting. In diplomatic circles, a departure from norms were noticed. Strategic affairs analyst Brahma Chellaney in a post on X said that Rubio directly calling the Prime Minister is a “big protocol departure.” He stated that the norm had been of a visiting Secretary of the State to call on EAM first. The subsequent calling on the Prime Minister used to be a courtesy call, he added.
Rubio’s visit to India is a first from a top-ranking official from the Trump administration. His visit was preceded by a change in the Green Card processing norms by the US which threaten to put cases of the Indian H1B Visa holders in limbo.
US ambassador in new Delhi Sergio Gor has sought to spotlight “warming of relations” between New Delhi and Washington. Gor since his appointment as an ambassador for India and the Central Asia by Trump has been seeking to reset ties between the two nations.
“Marco Rubio, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. Secretary Rubio briefed Prime Minister on the sustained progress in bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties,’ said the PMO in a media statement.
It further stated that “Secretary Rubio shared US perspective on various regional and global issues, including the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s consistent support for peace efforts and reiterated the call for peaceful resolution of the conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.”
Reports accompanied Rubio’s departure for India from Washington that “India will be buying more US crude oils.” Reports also stated that the US is pitching for India to buy Venezuelan oil. With Strait of Hormuz falling under the shadow of US-Iran military conflicts, India seems to have become vulnerable on energy front.
