From Factory Worker to China’s Richest Woman: Why Zhou Qunfei Sat Between Elon Musk and Tim Cook

Mumbai, May 15, 2026 — A post by commentator Jason Chen on X has sparked widespread discussion online after highlighting the remarkable story of Chinese billionaire entrepreneur Zhou Qunfei, who drew attention at a recent U.S.-China banquet by being seated between Elon Musk and Tim Cook.

According to the viral post, Zhou’s appearance at the high-profile dinner symbolized one of the most dramatic self-made success stories in modern Chinese business history.

Zhou, founder of Lansi Technology, was born in a small village in China’s Hunan Province under extremely poor conditions. Her mother died when she was five years old, while her father was reportedly left disabled and blind after a workplace accident. Financial hardship forced Zhou to leave school at age 16 and move to Guangdong to work in factories.

She reportedly began as a glass grinder on assembly lines while studying at night to gain certifications in accounting and computer operations. After years of saving wages, Zhou gathered around 20,000 yuan and started a small watch-glass workshop in Shenzhen with the help of family members.

Her fortunes changed during the early mobile phone boom when her business secured orders for TCL phone screens. Sensing larger opportunities in smartphone glass manufacturing, Zhou founded Lansi Technology, focusing on research, development, and production of touch-screen glass panels.

A major breakthrough came after Lansi reportedly secured a contract for Motorola’s iconic V3 mobile phone. The deal helped establish the company as a major global supplier, eventually opening doors to partnerships with brands including Nokia and Samsung.

Another defining moment arrived in 2007 when Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone. As the smartphone industry shifted toward glass touchscreens, Lansi Technology reportedly worked closely with Apple engineers to develop mass-production capabilities for iPhone glass panels.

The partnership transformed Lansi Technology into one of the world’s leading suppliers of touch-screen glass, with its products later being used across Apple devices including iPads and MacBooks.

The X post also noted that Zhou’s seating arrangement near Musk and Cook reflected her company’s growing influence beyond smartphones. Lansi Technology has expanded into automotive and robotics components, supplying products to companies including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Li Auto.

Today, Zhou Qunfei is widely recognized as one of China’s most successful self-made entrepreneurs — a journey that began in rural poverty and eventually placed her among the world’s most influential technology leaders.
