Elon Musk has accused unnamed “oligarchs” of blocking Starlink’s India entry, alleging that efforts to protect existing market interests amount to a “crime against the people of India.”
New Delhi, October 7, 2026 — Billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday accused that the Indian oligarchs are blocking entry of Starlink in India. Musk also claimed that the block of Starlink is a “crime against the people of India.”
“Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people. You can guess who they are … This is a crime against the people of India!” wrote Musk on X.
He quoted while commenting a post by the user DogeDesigner, which stated: “11,256 of India’s listed villages still lacked 4G coverage as of May 2026. India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions in March 2026, but only 440.87 million were rural. Rural subscription density was 48.31 per 100 people, compared with 126.80 in urban India.”
This user shared an article length post on the telecom reach in India, making several claims. Incidentally, this user in the past has been seen posting posts which are seen in appreciation of Musk.
Musk owns US telecom giant Starlink. The satellite communication giant is operating in South Asia also with Nepal in its footprints.
Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw had last year shared a post on X in which he had welcomed Starlink to India. But the post had soon vanished, stoking speculations. Later Airtel and Jio announced partnerships with Starlink.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last visit to the US, Musk had called on him along with his sons. But Musk still remains frustrated as Starlink is yet to get an official approval to operate in India.
By calling ‘Oligarchs’ as villains, Musk has sought to blame the Indian telecom giants of Jio and Airtel. India’s third telecom operator is Vodafone which has an alliance with the state-run BSNL.
India and the US relations have also been mired in a state of stress in the last 18 months after president Donald Trump assumed power in Washington. India and the US trade relations also faced spells of tariff measures from Washington.
Trump by not visiting India has also kept the Quad in a state of suspended animation. India currently holds presidency of Quad.
