Karim Sadjadpour tells CNN that Tehran sees a shift to “mutual strangulation” strategy but warns unpredictability of Donald Trump keeps risk of military escalation alive

New Delhi, May 1, 2026 — Concerns over a potential escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran have resurfaced after analyst Karim Sadjadpour suggested that Tehran may not be fully anticipating the possibility of renewed military confrontation, despite growing warnings from US officials.
Speaking to CNN, Sadjadpour reacted to remarks by US Senator Richard Blumenthal, who indicated the possibility of an “imminent” major strike, potentially involving American ground troops.
“I thought that was significant what Senator Blumenthal said,” Sadjadpour noted, adding that Iran currently believes the conflict dynamic has shifted. “I think Iran feels that we’ve gone from a hot war to this policy of mutual strangulation, with Iran trying to choke the global economy… and hope that American public opinion is going to restrain Trump.”
He explained that both sides appear to be engaged in a strategy of economic and political pressure rather than direct confrontation. “Trump is obviously trying to do the same thing, to squeeze Iran, to try to force it into capitulation,” he said.
However, Sadjadpour cautioned that Iran may be underestimating the risk of escalation. “I think Iran is not anticipating this idea that there will be a return to military action. But what they know with President Trump is he’s obviously unpredictable,” he said, referring to Donald Trump.
Information War and Propaganda Tactics
Sadjadpour also highlighted Iran’s increasing efforts to shape global and American public opinion through unconventional means, including social media messaging and diplomatic channels.
“It’s a reflection of the fact that Iran is really trying to speak the lingo of American public opinion… in a way that we’re not doing,” he observed.
He pointed to instances of Iranian officials and affiliated accounts engaging in online trolling and messaging aimed at US audiences. Some of these efforts, he suggested, may even originate from within the United States, raising potential concerns about sanctions violations.
Khamenei’s Rare Statement Raises Eyebrows
The analyst further drew attention to a rare public statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who reiterated Tehran’s defiant stance.
In his remarks, Khamenei warned that “foreign actors have no place in the Persian Gulf except the depths of the waters” and vowed that Iran would safeguard its nuclear capabilities.
Sadjadpour said the tone of the statement was notable. “He’s speaking the language of the Revolutionary Guards much more than a cleric,” he said, suggesting that the influence of Iran’s military establishment remains dominant in shaping policy.
He added that the leadership style appears increasingly hardline. “At this point… he resembles more someone in hiding, bent on revenge, than a leader of a nation state focused on governance,” Sadjadpour remarked.
A Fragile Balance
The developments come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with both Washington and Tehran engaged in strategic posturing. While there is no confirmation of imminent military action, the rhetoric on both sides indicates a fragile and potentially volatile situation.
Sadjadpour’s assessment underscores a key risk: miscalculation. As both sides pursue pressure tactics, the absence of clear communication channels could increase the likelihood of unintended escalation.
