New Delhi, February 4: US President Donald Trump may speak to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping shortly for a “deal” on tariff. Trump is hopeful that China will also fall in line on way Mexico and Canada bent to safeguard American interests.
“US President will speak to his Chinese counterpart, President Xi, in the next day or so,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Trump wants Xi to take back illegal Chinese immigrants. The US appears keen that China should take back illegal immigrants on the line of Columbia.

In all, the US under Trump is whipping tariffs for a war against immigrants. Mexico and Canada borders have mostly been blamed for the routes employed by the illegal immigrants to enter the US.
Earlier, Columbia had agreed to take back all the illegal immigrants. The issue of “irregular immigrants” had also figured in the first meeting of India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar with his American counterpart Marco Rubio.
“More than 10 million illegal aliens attempted to enter the United States under Biden’s leadership, including a rising number of Chinese nationals and people on the terror watchlist,” the White House said in a statement as a part of the explanatory note on the imposition of 10 per cent tariff on China.
Trump ordered a pause on tariffs against Mexico and Canada yesterday. In long posts on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that both Mexico and Canada will guard borders with US against illegal immigrants.
Reports said that the US is sending illegal Indian immigrants back home on military jets. Also, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that El Salvador agreed to take American prisoners.
‘Next China is still China’; Wang Yi seeks conciliation with US, Europe
The Trump administration believes that the Chinese illegal immigrants are entering the US through the Canadian and Mexican borders. “This problem is not confined to the southern border – encounters at the northern border with Canada are rising as well,” added the White House in the statement.
Trump will also pressure Xi to yield on trade for a substantial cut on the trade surplus in favour of the Communist ruled country. China’s one-third of $1 trillion surplus is accounted for by the trade with the US.
Trump whipped up Mexico, Canada, and China with tariffs with common allegations of trafficking of drugs. The US had resumed talking to China under the Joe Biden administration with a framework of cooperation on fentanyl.
By all accounts, Trump’s tariff war is seen more directed at immigrants. But China has indicated that Beijing may not be browbeaten like others. Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi almost chided Rubio in the first phone call.
