China Asserts in 1st Contact with Trump Administration on Taiwan

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, January 25: China has sought to browbeat the Donald Trump administration in the first contact over the issue of Taiwan. Chinese foreign affairs minister Wang Yi sternly told his US counterpart Marco Rubio that he should behave.

“Wang Yi said that big countries should act in a manner befitting their status, shoulder their due international responsibilities, maintain world peace and help countries realize common development. I hope you will act accordingly and play a constructive role for the future of the people of China and the United States, as well as for the peace and stability of the world,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the conversation of Wang with Rubio.

The Chinese statement quoted Rubio, saying that “the United States does not support ‘Taiwan independence’ and hopes that the Taiwan question can be resolved peacefully in a manner acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait”.

The US statement on the conversation over phone didn’t mention Wang’s stern message for the US to “behave befitting the status of an international power”. “According to the Chinese readout, Wang Yi pointed out that the two heads of state have set the tone for China-US relations. And then Wang Yi goes and breaks the tone by scolding the US Secretary of State,” said Sari Arho Havrén, a China analyst, in a post on X.

She further stated that the “fact that China needs to overlook its own sanctions on Rubio certainly doesn’t ease Wang Yi’s irritation. This is not going to be an easy relationship.”

China had sanctioned Rubio twice for his raising the issue of human rights violations in China. As a senator, Rubio had been sharply critical of Chinese human rights records in Tibet and Xinjiang. He also piloted the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.

Wang is a trusted lieutenant of Chinese President Xi Jinping. He is also a veteran diplomat, while helming the foreign affairs department of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“Secretary Rubio emphasized that the Trump Administration will pursue a U.S.-PRC relationship that advances U.S. interests and puts the American people first. The Secretary also stressed the United States’ commitment to our allies in the region and serious concern over China’s coercive actions against Taiwan and in the South China Sea,” said the handout issued by the US State Department on Rubio-Wang conversation.

The Chinese statement on Taiwan said that “Wang Yi elaborated on China’s principled position on the Taiwan question and urged the U.S. side to handle it prudently”. “Wang emphasized that Taiwan has been part of China’s territory since ancient times, and we will never allow Taiwan to be split from China,” added Beijing.

It also stated that “the United States has made solemn commitments on abiding by the one-China policy in the three joint communiques, and it should not renege on them”.

The US statement on the conversation was just one paragraph long and didn’t mention the issue of Taiwan. However, South China Morning Post in a report said that the US reiterated its commitment to the ‘One China Policy’ but at the same time stressed that no coercive actions be taken against the self-governed Taipei.
