Miller’s elevation tells you what Trump wants for his remaining two years: a chief of staff who shares his instincts, not one who tempers them.

New Delhi, November 7, 2026 — The White House on Friday released a new reel to announce Stephen Miller as the new Chief of the Staff. The reel also posited Miller coming with the mission to strengthen US President Donald Trump. The appointment comes close on the heels of a major electoral drubbing for the Republicans in the Mid-Term.

Miller has spent a decade as the voice of Trump’s most uncompromising ideas, mostly from just off camera. On Monday he moves into the job that decides who gets to speak to the president. Trump announced the change on Friday, days after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress, saying Miller, “one of my most trusted advisors,” would replace Susie Wiles, who moves to Trump’s political operation. Trump’s explanation was brief: “He gets it.”

Miller, 41, was raised in liberal Santa Monica, California, and made a reputation at Duke University as a combative conservative columnist, Reuters reports. Al Jazeera notes he led the Duke Conservative Union and defended the lacrosse players accused in a rape case. PBS NewsHour says he started on Capitol Hill working for Tea Party figures including Michele Bachmann and Sen. Jeff Sessions. As Sessions’ aide, he helped build opposition to a 2013 bipartisan immigration bill. He joined Trump’s 2016 campaign as a speechwriter and policy adviser.

In Trump’s first term, Miller was a senior adviser who shaped the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries and the “zero tolerance” policy that separated migrant families. After the 2020 loss, he founded America First Legal, which filed complaints accusing companies including Nike of discriminating against white people. In January 2025 he became deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser.

Reuters says he drove the second term’s crackdown, setting a target of 3,000 arrests per day, far above previous levels, with reports alleging that enforcement increasingly targets people with no or minor criminal records. In a leaked call on restricting legal immigration, an immigration law firm reports, he said the priority was to “turn off the faucet.”

Allies praise his loyalty and clarity. US Vice President JD Vance has called him an “amazing patriot.” In his first public comment, Miller called Trump “the most transformative political leader in American History.” Critics say his record has caused harm. The Southern Poverty Law Center and others have called him a nativist, while his advocated policies courts have limited. Trump’s side says it is carrying out voters’ mandate on the border.

The role differs from the one he mastered. The chief of staff manages personnel, coordinates priorities and oversees relations with Congress. Wiles built a reputation as a strict manager who reduced turnover and leaks. Trump is reportedly furious over the midterm results, adding pressure on whoever runs the building. Miller now faces three tests.

Congress: A Democratic House and Senate can block bills, hold hearings and subpoena records. A policy maximalist must now negotiate.

The staff: Controlling who reaches the president means balancing loyalists, competing factions and a diminished political position.

The agenda: The role is a key link to agencies and Congress. His portfolio widens from immigration to the whole government, including the economy and foreign policy.

Miller’s elevation tells you what Trump wants for his remaining two years: a chief of staff who shares his instincts, not one who tempers them.
