Patna, April 8, 2026 — Bihar cabinet minister Dilip Jaiswal has confirmed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will travel to Delhi on April 9 to complete his Rajya Sabha oath-taking formalities, with the National Democratic Alliance’s central leadership set to determine the state’s next political roadmap only after the ceremony is concluded.

Speaking to reporters, Jaiswal underlined that Nitish Kumar’s move to the upper house of Parliament is a constitutionally mandated process. “After winning the Rajya Sabha seat, the Chief Minister resigned from his MLC post at the Bihar Legislative Council. Now he has to take oath in the Rajya Sabha — this is a constitutional procedure that he will complete,” Jaiswal said. “After the NDA meeting in Delhi, everything will become clear.”

Nitish Kumar is set to take his oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on April 10, 2026 — marking his first formal entry into the Upper House and a major shift in Bihar’s political landscape. After his arrival in the national capital, he is likely to meet key central figures including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, signalling the political weight of this transition.

Jaiswal’s remarks echo the broader NDA position that all decisions on Bihar’s future government will be taken collectively. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi had earlier stated: “After that, the central leadership of the BJP and the NDA will elect the leader. Nitish Kumar will also be part of the process.”

According to reports, Bihar could get its first BJP Chief Minister as a result of this transition, with Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary among the frontrunners — a development that has left JD(U) workers uneasy despite Nitish Kumar’s assurances that “nothing will change.”

A new government in Bihar is expected to be formed after April 14, with the Bihar Home Department already issuing orders confirming that Nitish Kumar will retain his Z-Plus security cover even after stepping down as Chief Minister.

Jaiswal did not hold back when asked about Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav’s renewed demand to roll back Bihar’s liquor prohibition law. His response was pointed and personal.

“When Tejashwi Yadav wakes up in the morning, only two things come to his mind — crime and liquor. I keep wondering why these two things never leave his memory,” Jaiswal said. “The answer is simple: he has a very close relationship with both.”
