New Delhi, March 12, 2026 — Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah broke his silence in Srinagar on Thursday, speaking to reporters in the immediate aftermath of a failed attempt on his life. Abdullah delivered a sombre warning about the rising climate of hatred in the country.
Abdullah confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally called to inquire about his wellbeing following the incident. “He asked how I was. I told him that by the grace of God, I survived,” Abdullah said, adding that the Home Minister assured him the suspect had been apprehended and that a thorough investigation would follow.
The former Chief Minister, however, insisted that a proper inquiry was essential. “This is now a matter for the MP level — they must find out why this happened,” he said, pointing to what he described as a systemic security failure at the wedding venue where the incident occurred. Abdullah noted that while senior figures were present at the event and police presence should have been mandatory, adequate protection was absent. “Police were needed — not just for me, but because of the environment we are living in today,” he said.
At the heart of Abdullah’s remarks was a sharp indictment of what he called the “web of hatred” spreading across the nation. He attributed the growing lawlessness, in part, to the misuse of licensed weapons, and warned that voices of friendship and interfaith goodwill are increasingly finding no space in public life.
“No religion teaches hatred. Every faith teaches love, compassion, and helping one another. I believe we have abandoned that religion,” Abdullah said pointedly.
The attack, he suggested, was symptomatic of a deeper social crisis. “Hatred has taken root. Those who speak of friendship, of love between communities — there is very little room left for them today.”
A full security and administrative inquiry into the incident is expected to be ordered.
