Mumbai, April 12, 2026 — Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle died on Sunday at the age of 92 in Mumbai. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news, saying: “My mother passed away today. People can pay their last respects at 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm tomorrow at Shivaji Park.”
She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on April 11 after suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, before developing serious cardiac and respiratory complications. Her treating physician Dr Pratit Samdani confirmed she passed away due to multi-organ failure.
The Voice That Defined Generations
Born Asha Mangeshkar on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra, she grew up in a musical household — her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a renowned classical singer. She sang her first playback song for the 1943 Marathi drama Majha Bal — beginning a career that would span over eight decades.
What followed was nothing short of a phenomenon. She sang in around 20 Indian and foreign languages, and in 2006 herself disclosed she had close to 12,000 songs to her credit. She became the voice for some of Hindi cinema’s greatest leading ladies — from Meena Kumari and Madhubala to Zeenat Aman, Urmila Matondkar and Kajol.
What made Bhosle singular was the extraordinary range of her art. Where her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar was revered for purity and classical grace, Asha was fearless — playful, seductive, soulful and sublime, sometimes all within the same film. From the smoky cabaret of Piya Tu Ab To Aaja to the heartbreak of Dil Cheez Kya Hai from Umrao Jaan, from the teasing Achha Ji Main Haari to the poignant Mera Kuch Saman Tumhare Paas Pada Hai, she inhabited every emotion with complete conviction. She worked with composers including Shankar-Jaikishan, OP Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri, and AR Rahman across her career.
She married legendary music composer RD Burman in 1980 — a partnership that produced some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved songs. She won two National Awards and seven Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. In 1997, British band Cornershop immortalised her in their international hit Brimful of Asha, which topped the UK Singles Chart in 1998.
The Last Survivor of a Golden Age
Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle captured the mood of millions on X: “The last survivor of the great era of Rafi, Kishore, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Talat, Geeta Dutt, Lata and Asha is gone and while we use the expression loosely, it is really the end of an era.”
Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai called her “the one and only… an absolute LEGEND. The most versatile playback singer ever.” Author and strategist Nitin Gokhale wrote: “From the seductive to the sublime and from soulful to playful, she was master of all genres.” In 2023, she performed at a special concert, ASHA@90: Live in Concert, in Dubai to mark her 90th birthday — a reminder that the voice never really left.
She is survived by her son Anand Bhosle. India has lost its last nightingale. The songs, mercifully, are forever.
