New Delhi, May 8, 2026 — Amid fast-paced political drama unfolding in Chennai, TVK’s Vijay has stitched a post-poll alliance to command a support of 120 MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Vijay is likely to call on Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to formally stake claims to form the government in the state.

After the Congress announced support with its five MLAs to the TVK, the post-poll politics in Chennai took dramatic turns. Rumours floated of a possible DMK-AIADMK alliance in the state. But the Left parties finally announced their support to the TVK to “stop BJP” from influencing the state.

TVK’s one functionary even moved the Supreme Court for a direction to the Tamil Nadu Governor for an invitation to Vijay to form a government in the state. Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge is learnt to have spoken to leaders of the Left parties to persuade them to support the TVK.

Informed sources said that smaller allies of the DMK, with a total strength seven MLAs, have extended their support to the TVK. This helps the TVK to get the support of 120 MLAs in an Assembly where the halfway mark is 118.

Adding twist to the drama, BJP general secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh posted on X that the “Congress will end up with eggs on the face.” But the Congress seems to have come out winning in the tug of war for the government formation by convincing the DMK allies to support the TVK.

The Tamil Nadu Governor had been insisting that Vijay needed to demonstrate a majority in the state Assembly. This fuelled a firestorm of debate on the social media with legal luminaries interpreting the Article 164 of the Constitution that deals with the power of the Governor in calling for the government formation.

The situation at the time of writing suggests a rupture in the DMK-led alliance, as the Congress and the smaller allies shift to the TVK. Political observers in Chennai argue that the Congress and the Left parties are seeing the writing on the wall that the rise of Vijay in the Tamil Nadu politics is inevitable.

Tamil Nadu after decades will return to a coalition-led government, as the TVK will depend on post-poll allies for the stability of the government. Observers state that a coalition-led government augurs well for Tamil Nadu, as Vijay and his party lacks administrative experience and the Congress and the Left may act as checks and balances on the new government.
