As Vijay’s TVK struggles to secure the numbers needed to form the government, speculation is mounting over a possible AIADMK-DMK understanding, NDA realignments, and a dramatic reshaping of Tamil Nadu politics.

New Delhi, May 8, 2026 —Tamil Nadu’s post-election political uncertainty deepened on Friday amid intense speculation over shifting alliances, backchannel negotiations, and the possibility of an unprecedented understanding between the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to prevent actor-turned-politician Vijay from forming the government.

Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai wrote on X that crucial meetings involving the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi would determine whether Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam can secure the support needed to cross the 118-seat majority mark in the Assembly.

Sardesai suggested that failure to secure Left and VCK backing could pave the way for a dramatic AIADMK-DMK arrangement, potentially encouraged by the Centre. Such a move, he argued, could also trigger the DMK’s exit from the INDIA opposition bloc and reshape Tamil Nadu’s political equations ahead of the 2029 national elections.

Political journalist Stalin SP further claimed on X that the AIADMK had decided to walk out of the NDA and was preparing to approach Governor Rajendra Arlekar to stake claim to form the government, reportedly with outside support from the DMK.

According to his update, several newly elected AIADMK MLAs have already left a resort in Puducherry after handing letters of support to AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

Adding to the speculation, writer Anantha Narayan argued that both DMK chief M. K. Stalin and Palaniswami may view cooperation as necessary for the survival of the Dravidian political order.

He described the potential arrangement as a “Mahagatbandhan-style” survival strategy aimed at countering the rise of Vijay and the Congress-backed front.

If no stable coalition emerges, observers say the Assembly could be placed under suspended animation with the Governor assuming a larger constitutional role. Political developments over the next 48 hours are expected to determine the future direction of Tamil Nadu politics.
