An F-15E, two A-10C+ Thunderbolts, and two Blackhawk helicopters reported hit as veterans and analysts challenge official narrative on Iranian air defences

New Delhi, April 4, 2026 — The United States suffered significant aircraft losses over Iran in a single day of combat operations, with four military aircraft reported either shot down or damaged, even as senior Pentagon officials had publicly declared Iranian air defences “obliterated.”

Security analyst Babak Taghvaee confirmed the shootdown of two A-10C+ Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft, one F-15E belonging to the 494th Fighter Squadron, and damage to two Blackhawk helicopters. One of the A-10C+ aircraft, initially believed to have safely reached Iraq for an emergency landing, actually crashed in Kuwait after the pilot ejected. The pilot was rescued.

The second A-10C+ was lost during a search and rescue operation launched after the F-15E was shot down — meaning Iranian air defenses successfully engaged a rescue mission already underway.

“Self-Evidently Untrue”

The losses drcraft reported either shot down or damaged over Iran today,” Davis wrote. “This, after Secretary of Defense Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Caine continue to tell America all of Iranian air defenses have been obliterated. Self-evidently that was untrue.”

Davis went furthew sharp condemnation from Daniel Davis, a U.S. Army veteran and defence analyst, who posted a detailed accounting on X. “Four U.S. airer, alleging systemic deception around the war’s justification and execution. “The justification for launching this war of choice was also an absolute lie — the alleged imminent threat of a nuclear Iran,” he wrote, adding that the administration had previously claimed Iran was “as weak as it has been in 47 years.”

Davis also cited a report by The Intercept alleging Pentagon officials have been concealing actual U.S. military casualty numbers from the public.

“This is the bitter fruit of fraud and arrogance,” Davis wrote, adding: “I fear we’ve yet to find out how deep the cost will be before this war finally comes to an end.”

Strategic Fallout

Beyond the aircraft losses — now running into billions of dollars — Davis warned of deepening strategic failure, noting Iran remains firmly in control of the Strait of Hormuz with no U.S. military means to force it open, and no diplomatic option remaining after what he described as two instances of bad-faith negotiations used as cover for military operations.
