Uttar Pradesh recorded a 21% drop in road accidents and a 22% decline in fatalities between January and April 2026 as the Yogi government expanded road safety measures, driver health checks and the Zero Fatality Scheme statewide.

Lucknow, May 23, 2026 — Uttar Pradesh recorded a significant decline in road accidents and fatalities during the first four months of 2026, with the Yogi Adityanath government attributing the improvement to intensified road safety measures, public awareness drives and stricter enforcement initiatives.

According to data from the e-DAR portal, the state witnessed a 21 percent reduction in road accidents and a 22 percent decline in deaths between January and April 2026 compared to the corresponding period last year.

Official figures showed that 3,669 fewer accidents were reported during the period, while accident-related deaths fell by 2,212 cases, indicating a marked improvement in road safety indicators.

The state government said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been regularly reviewing the performance of departments concerned with road safety and has directed authorities to intensify preventive measures and awareness campaigns.

As part of these efforts, the Transport Department installed road safety awareness hoardings at nearly 2,000 locations across the state and continued publicity campaigns aimed at encouraging safer driving behaviour.

The government has also intensified monitoring of public transport drivers. Following directions from the Chief Minister, regular health and eye examinations of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) drivers are being conducted every six months.

“Till April 2026, 18,975 drivers had undergone health check-ups, while examinations of another 2,560 drivers remain underway,” said Ashutosh Niranjan, Transport Commissioner, Uttar Pradesh.

Several operational changes have also been introduced in public transport services. “Retro-reflector tapes have been installed on UPSRTC buses to improve visibility, breath analyser tests have been made mandatory, and buses travelling beyond 300 kilometres are now required to have two drivers,” he added.

The government is also expanding the Zero Fatality Scheme, launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to reduce accident-related deaths.

Initially, 242 critical police stations in 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh had been identified under the initiative. According to the Traffic Directorate, implementation of the programme helped save 566 lives within four months.

The scheme has now been expanded to 487 critical police stations across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh, added the official.

To support the initiative, authorities have formed 573 critical corridor teams comprising 2,865 police personnel, including sub-inspectors and constables, tasked with preventing fatalities and improving response mechanisms.

Infrastructure interventions are also underway. Between January 1 and May 15, 2026, authorities identified 656 holding areas across all 18 divisions of the state, with 630 already notified.

Agra division recorded the highest number with 121 holding areas, followed by Bareilly (103), Moradabad (75) and Azamgarh (62).

Transport Commissioner Ashutosh Niranjan said the department would soon launch another campaign focusing on road safety awareness, fitness of school vehicles, helmet usage and seat belt compliance.

He urged citizens to strictly follow traffic regulations and cooperate in reducing road accidents.
