Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay blamed previous governments for the spread of drug culture and pledged stronger policing, faster charge sheets, and tougher action on crimes against women.
Chennai, June 1, 2026 — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK president Vijay on Monday launched a sharp attack on previous administrations over the rise of drug abuse and crimes against women. He pledged stronger policing and faster justice delivery under his government. His remarks came amid claims of poor law and order situation after Vijay became Chief Minister of the state.
Addressing a public gathering in Tamil Nadu, Vijay said the growing drug culture across the state had contributed to social problems. He said that the menace posed a serious threat to women’s safety. Vijay questioned why earlier governments had failed to curb the menace at its initial stages.
“What have those who ruled before done? Drug culture has spread everywhere, from villages to cities. Had it been controlled at the beginning, would we have reached a situation where so many women and girls face such dangers today?” Vijay said.
The Chief Minister accused his political opponents of attempting to shift blame despite what he described as years of administrative neglect. He asserted that his government would remain focused on delivering security and welfare measures for the public regardless of criticism.
“Whatever accusations are made against us, we will continue to work honestly and firmly to provide everything that people need,” he said.
Highlighting steps taken by his administration, Vijay announced the appointment of senior police officers tasked with strengthening law and order and ensuring a more effective response to crimes against women.
He also referred to the state’s “Singa Pen” (Lioness) women’s police force initiative, describing it as part of broader efforts to make Tamil Nadu safer for women. According to Vijay, the government is working to ensure that charge sheets in cases involving crimes against women are filed more quickly and that investigations are completed without unnecessary delays.
The Chief Minister said officials had been directed to accelerate legal proceedings so that those found guilty receive stringent punishment at the earliest opportunity.
“We have instructed authorities to ensure that charge sheets are filed swiftly and that courts are able to deliver strict punishment to offenders as quickly as possible,” he said.
Vijay’s remarks come amid growing political debate in Tamil Nadu over law and order, drug trafficking, and women’s safety. Opposition parties have frequently raised concerns about rising crime, while the government maintains that it is strengthening enforcement mechanisms and improving policing infrastructure.
The issue of drug abuse has emerged as a major political flashpoint in the state, with parties across the spectrum calling for stronger action against narcotics networks and stricter measures to protect women and children.
