Czech President says Europe must build its own capabilities as uncertainty grows over future US military presence

By TRH World Desk

New Delhi, February 13, 2026 — Czech President Petr Pavel has delivered a stark warning about Europe’s security preparedness, saying the continent would struggle to replace American military capabilities if the United States were to withdraw from NATO.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Pavel acknowledged that Washington remains a cornerstone of the alliance’s defence structure. “The United States is a significant part of NATO defence and if all US presence and capabilities are withdrawn today, then we could say Europe will not be able to substitute this gap,” Pavel said.

His remarks come amid growing debate over Washington’s long-term military footprint in Europe and calls within NATO to strengthen the “European pillar” of the alliance. Pavel stressed that any shift must be coordinated and gradual.

“As partners and allies, we always work in coordination,” he said. “I truly believe that the idea of strengthening the European pillar of NATO will be well coordinated in a way that whatever capacity the United States would like to withdraw, they will inform us about the time frame, which will be realistic enough,” he added.

Such a timeline, he argued, would allow European nations to build their own strategic “enablers” — logistics, airlift, intelligence and missile defence — currently heavily reliant on US support.

Europe’s Strategic Wake-Up Call

The Czech president’s comments underscore mounting anxiety across European capitals about burden-sharing and strategic autonomy. While leaders increasingly speak of boosting defence spending and industrial capacity, few believe Europe can immediately replicate the scale of US military infrastructure.

“For European countries to build our own enabler so that we can effectively defend ourselves even if the United States decide to withdraw partially or totally their presence from Europe,” Pavel said, outlining what he described as a long-term necessity rather than a political choice.

The debate has intensified as global tensions rise and questions swirl over the durability of transatlantic commitments. The Petr Pavel Munich Security Conference intervention highlights a pivotal moment for NATO: whether Europe can transform rhetoric about strategic autonomy into credible deterrence — before any abrupt shift in US policy forces its hand.
