Cites “time to step down” after long tenure; highlights law-and-order gains, inclusive development and Centre’s support under PM Narendra Modi

By AMIT KUMAR

Patna, April 14, 2026 — In a significant political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced his resignation, marking the end of a long and consequential tenure that began with the formation of the first NDA government in the state on November 24, 2005.

In a statement posted on X after a cabinet meeting, Kumar said he had met the Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to formally submit his resignation, adding that a new government would now take charge. “We have served the people of Bihar continuously for many years. It is now time to step aside,” he said, while assuring full support and guidance to the incoming administration.

Kumar used the moment to underline what he described as the core achievements of his tenure—restoring the rule of law and driving broad-based development across communities. He said that since 2005, Bihar has witnessed governance focused on all sections, including Hindus, Muslims, upper castes, backward classes, extremely backward classes, Dalits and Mahadalits.

Highlighting sectoral progress, Kumar pointed to improvements in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, electricity and agriculture. He also emphasised targeted initiatives for women and youth, which have been a key plank of his governance model.

Looking ahead, Kumar referenced the government’s “7 Nischay-3” programme, a development blueprint for 2025–2030 aimed at accelerating growth and improving public welfare indicators. He expressed confidence that the roadmap would help Bihar emerge among India’s leading states.

The outgoing Chief Minister also acknowledged the Centre’s role in Bihar’s development, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continued support. “With the Centre’s cooperation, Bihar will develop at a faster pace and contribute significantly to national progress,” he said.

Kumar’s resignation comes at a time of shifting political equations in Bihar and ahead of the next electoral cycle. A key figure in state politics for nearly two decades, Kumar has alternated alliances between the NDA and opposition blocs, often positioning himself as a pivot in coalition politics.

His governance narrative has largely rested on improving law and order after the pre-2005 period and expanding welfare-driven development. Flagship schemes like the “7 Nischay” programmes have aimed at infrastructure expansion, youth empowerment and social inclusion.

However, his tenure has also seen political realignments, criticism over administrative challenges, and questions about succession planning within his party, Janata Dal (United).

The transition now raises key questions: Will the new government continue Kumar’s policy framework? And how will this shift impact alliance dynamics in the state?
