Mumbai, April 29, 2026 —Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo has publicly endorsed Palestine ’36, a historical drama by filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, calling it one of the most important films on the Israel-Palestine conflict. His support has amplified global attention on the film’s powerful narrative.
In the post, the film was described as “one of the greatest and most important films” about the history of the conflict. Ruffalo encouraged viewers to experience it in theatres. He even ventured to support those unable to afford tickets.
Israeli bombings and killings in Gaza have been widely condemned by film fraternity in the US. They have also been voicing concerns over the Iran War.
Palestine ‘36 explores the rarely told story of the 1936–39 Arab Revolt, in which Palestinians rose up against Britain’s colonial rule. Directed by Jacir, the film examines tensions within Palestinian communities alongside the broader political struggle shaped by British governance and the recommendations of the Peel Commission, which proposed partitioning the land.
The film stars Saleh Bakri and Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons. It has received strong institutional recognition. Palestine ‘36 was Palestine’s official selection for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards. It received the Tokyo International Film Festival’s Best Film Award.
Ruffalo is far from alone in championing the film. Mark Ruffalo, Diego Luna, Susan Sarandon, Riz Ahmed, Ava DuVernay, Mira Nair, Julie Delpy, and Ramy Youssef are among a raft of stars lending their support to a conversations season titled Talking Palestine ‘36, a joint initiative between Jacir’s production company Philistine Films and US distributors Watermelon Pictures.
“Palestine ‘36 is not just a film — it is a cultural moment,” producer Ossama Bawardi told reporters in the US.
Ruffalo’s public endorsement has accelerated conversation around a film that merges family testimony, archival gravitas, and cinematic craft — at a time when global debates around Palestinian representation remain at the fore.
Palestine ‘36 is currently in theatrical release in the United States via Watermelon Pictures.
