Mamata Banerjee Slams BJP in Kolkata, Rejects Claims on Women’s Safety and Law & Order

By TRH Political Desk

Kolkata, April 26, 2026 — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public address in Kolkata on Sunday, rejecting allegations about women’s safety in the state and accusing the Centre of selective governance and political bias.

Speaking in a combative tone, Banerjee dismissed BJP’s claims that women cannot move freely in West Bengal. “For 14 years, have you ever seen such a situation? Has anyone complained to you about being unable to step out?” she asked, challenging what she called “jumla politics” aimed at maligning the state’s image.

The Chief Minister also defended Kolkata’s socio-economic diversity, responding to criticism about living conditions in parts of the city. “Everyone has the right to live — whether rich or poor. Those who have worked hard to earn also have a right to dignity,” she said, pushing back against remarks that portray Kolkata negatively.

Turning her focus to the Centre, Banerjee questioned the BJP’s handling of law and order in other parts of the country, particularly referencing incidents in Delhi and other regions. She accused the Centre of failing to deploy adequate resources in sensitive areas while over-policing select events. “You send massive police deployment elsewhere, but when needed, where are the forces?” she asked.

In a serious allegation, Banerjee claimed that central forces were being misused during elections. She referred to reports of criminal elements allegedly being shielded and electronic voting machines (EVMs) being targeted. “We have heard incidents where criminals are being helped. People must protect the voting process,” she urged, calling on citizens to remain vigilant.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo also accused the BJP of taking action selectively against opposition workers while ignoring alleged misconduct by its own members. She warned that political dynamics would shift after the elections, emphasizing that local residents would continue to live with the consequences of such actions.

In a notable appeal, Banerjee urged people across party lines—including workers of Congress—not to act under political pressure but to prioritize public welfare. “Work for the people. That is my only request,” she said.

Her remarks come amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where electoral battles between the TMC and BJP have intensified, often accompanied by sharp rhetoric and allegations from both sides.
