Kolkata, April 26, 2026 — At a high-voltage election rally in North 24 Parganas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress, accusing it of betraying its foundational slogan of “Maa, Mati, Manush” and failing the people of West Bengal.
Targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Modi alleged that the TMC had “redefined” its own slogan through its governance record. “The cruelty of TMC made ‘maa’ cry, handed over ‘maati’ to infiltrators and syndicates, and forced the ‘manush’ of Bengal to flee,” he said, in one of his sharpest attacks yet.
Modi said the party, which rose to power nearly 15 years ago on the promise of “mother, motherland and people,” could no longer even invoke the phrase. “If they utter those words today, their sins will be exposed,” he said, accusing the ruling party of presiding over a breakdown of governance.
The remarks come as campaigning for the bitterly contested Bengal polls enters its final stretch, with the second phase of voting scheduled for April 29 across 142 assembly segments.
Referring to the first phase of polling held on April 23, which recorded a turnout of around 93%, Modi claimed the high voter participation had shaken the TMC’s confidence. “The arrogance of the Trinamool Congress has been shattered in the first phase. In the second phase, the BJP’s overwhelming victory is becoming certain,” he asserted.
The constituencies going to polls in the next phase are considered a stronghold of the TMC, where the BJP had limited success in previous elections. Shifting focus to employment and youth issues, Modi accused the state government of failing Bengal’s young population.
“The youth of Bengal are very talented, but the TMC government has pushed them towards addiction instead of opportunity,” he said.
Positioning the BJP as an alternative, Modi highlighted Bengal’s cultural and creative potential, referencing the popularity of local digital content and music on social media. “Bengal is a land of creativity. The BJP will make economy and content creation its strength,” he added.
With campaigning set to conclude on April 27, the political battle between the BJP and TMC has intensified, marked by sharp rhetoric and competing narratives over governance, identity and development.
The outcome of the remaining phases is expected to determine whether the ruling TMC retains its dominance or the BJP can make deeper inroads into Bengal’s political landscape.
