Hemant Soren Drives to Jonha Falls, Puts Jharkhand’s Natural Beauty in Spotlight
Ranchi, June 28, 2026 — There was no political rally, government review meeting or policy announcement. Instead, the lush forests of Jharkhand and the cascading waters of Jonha Falls took centre stage as Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren spent part of Sunday exploring one of the state’s most picturesque destinations with his wife, Kalpana Murmu.
Videos shared by the Chief Minister’s Office showed Soren himself driving an open jeep through forest roads before reaching the famed Jonha Falls, where the couple walked through the scenic landscape, admired the waterfall and interacted with local residents.
Kalpana Murmu later shared photographs and videos from the visit on X, describing it as an opportunity to spend “peaceful moments amidst the enchanting valleys of nature.”
“I had the opportunity to visit Jonha Falls, located in Ranchi district, with Hemant Ji. I spent some peaceful moments amidst the enchanting valleys of nature, savoured local fruits, and also had conversations with the local people,” she wrote.
Calling the waterfall one of Jharkhand’s priceless natural treasures, she urged tourists from across India to experience its beauty.
“The natural beauty of Jonha Falls attracts everyone. I urge all of you to definitely visit and experience this priceless heritage of Jharkhand,” she said.
More Than a Waterfall
Located around 40-45 kilometres from Ranchi on the Ranchi-Purulia road, Jonha Falls is among Jharkhand’s most celebrated waterfalls. Popularly known as Gautamdhara, the site derives its second name from a nearby temple dedicated to Lord Buddha, adding spiritual significance to its natural appeal.
Unlike many waterfalls formed by rivers flowing over cliffs, Jonha Falls is a classic hanging valley waterfall where water plunges nearly 43 metres amid rocky terrain and dense forests. Visitors descend hundreds of stone steps to reach the base, where the roar of the falling water contrasts with the serenity of the surrounding sal and bamboo forests.
The area also hosts traditional weekly village markets, giving visitors a glimpse of local tribal culture, handicrafts and regional cuisine. Seasonal fruits, forest produce and handmade items are commonly sold by villagers, making the destination as much a cultural experience as a natural one.
Tourism in Focus
The Chief Minister’s visit comes as the Jharkhand government continues to promote eco-tourism and nature-based travel. Ranchi district is home to several spectacular waterfalls, including Hundru Falls, Dassam Falls and Sita Falls, collectively drawing thousands of visitors during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
Jonha Falls has emerged as one of the state’s signature attractions because it combines scenic beauty, forest landscapes, religious heritage and accessibility from Ranchi. Government tourism agencies describe it as one of the most tranquil destinations in the state, located amid the undulating terrain of the Ranchi Plateau.
By personally showcasing the destination instead of merely promoting it through advertisements, Hemant Soren’s visit appeared designed to encourage domestic tourism while highlighting the state’s rich natural landscape.
For many watching the videos online, the images of the Chief Minister steering a jeep through forest tracks before pausing to enjoy local fruits and converse with villagers offered a different political image—one that placed Jharkhand’s forests, waterfalls and indigenous culture at the heart of the state’s identity.
