Former Lithuanian FM Warns Europe Against ‘Reengaging Russia’

New Delhi, May 14, 2026 — Gabrielius Landsbergis has sparked debate in Europe after strongly cautioning against attempts to “reengage” Vladimir Putin and negotiate a quick settlement to the Russia-Ukraine war.

He argued that European leaders currently have “nothing new” to offer and risk returning from talks carrying “Putin’s wish list.” He also criticized recent Western diplomatic trends, citing US businessman and envoy Steve Witkoff and subsequent American pressure on Ukraine regarding territorial concessions.
According to Landsbergis, any Russian demands in negotiations could include blocking future European Union expansion, easing sanctions on Russia, and limiting future military aid to Ukraine — all measures he believes would weaken Kyiv.
The former Lithuanian diplomat also expressed skepticism about Europe’s ability to negotiate from a position of strength, arguing that EU decision-making is often slow and diluted. He questioned the effectiveness of initiatives such as the so-called “Coalition of the Willing.”
Most notably, Landsbergis argued that Ukraine itself should remain the central actor in any negotiations with Russia. He said Kyiv likely already has open communication channels with Moscow and possesses the real leverage on the battlefield.
“Europe could help Ukraine most by staying out of this,” he concluded.
