New Delhi, April 27, 2026 — The Congress on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging a “fixed match” between the two over representation from Punjab in the Rajya Sabha.
Addressing a press conference, Congress treasurer Ajay Maken claimed that despite securing only around 6.6% of the vote share in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, the BJP now controls nearly 86% of the state’s Rajya Sabha seats following the defection of seven AAP MPs.
Maken said that six out of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab are now aligned with the BJP, calling it a “distortion of democratic mandate.” He warned that such developments could have serious implications for a sensitive border state like Punjab, which has historically faced security challenges.
Referring to concerns over rising drug abuse and gangster activity, Maken cautioned that these trends, if unchecked, could create conditions similar to those seen during the turbulent 1980s. He argued that political instability and perceived disenfranchisement could be exploited by anti-national elements.
Targeting AAP, Maken said the party’s image as a “common man’s party” has been exposed. He alleged that the average net worth of seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who later joined the BJP is about ₹818 crore, indicating that the party favours wealthy candidates.
He also questioned AAP’s candidate selection process, claiming that individuals with little prior association with the party were given Rajya Sabha nominations due to their financial strength, while early members like Yogendra Yadav and Kumar Vishwas were sidelined.
Maken further alleged that AAP acts as a “proxy” that benefits the BJP by cutting into Congress votes in key states such as Gujarat and Haryana.
