South Korea Joins European Nations in Issuing Order to Block DeepSeek

New Delhi, February 6: South Korea has joined a number of nations in issuing orders to block the Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek. The South Korean authorities on Thursday said that orders have been issued to block DeepSeek access from the government computers.

The Chinese startup had made a global splash by unveiling R1 chatbox to challenge the domination of ChatGPT of OpenAI. The stock market battered OpenAI after the launch of the chatbox by DeepSeek last month internationally.

The South Korean authorities said on Thursday that DeepSeek declined to share information sought by the data watchdog. The South Korea data watchdog had asked the owner of DeepSeek to share details about data storage and other related issues.

Italy last month had also issued orders to block access to DeepSeek after the data watchdog’s directive to the Chinese startup wasn’t responded on the use and storage of the data.

Experts allege that DeepSeek is storing data in China. France also has taken restrictive measures against DeepSeek for denying information for data transparency.

Indian authorities have not yet stated stand on the Chinese app which is being widely used in the country. India in the past had banned several Chinese mobile app for fear of data misuse. Indian parliament has recently passed a law on protection of data of the people.

The South Korean authorities said that instructions have been passed to block access of DeepSeek in computers currently installed at military facilities. The South Korean police and trade body also have issued instructions to block access to DeepSeek.

They have all reasoned that the generative AI platform by not sharing information sought for data protection and transparency is a risk for the personal data of the citizens.

India had banned the popular Chinese short video platform TikTok. The US also passed a law to ban the Chinese video sharing App. But US President Donald Trump has given a window to allow TikTok to remain functional temporarily during which an American ownership is being worked out.
