New Delhi, January 20: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday trashed the media speculation that the Budget session of Parliament may take place in the new building. Birla said that President Droupadi Murmu will address the joint session of the two Houses of Parliament in the existing building only.

“New Parliament building is still under construction. President will address in the existing building of Parliament,” Birla tweeted late Friday evening. Media has been speculating for a while about the completion of the new Parliament building.

Earlier, the media had speculated that the Winter session of Parliament would take place in the new building. Afterwards, it was being speculated that the Budget session of Parliament would take place in the new building. But Birla, who had previously given varied accounts of the completion of the new Parliament building, stated that the construction activities are still being going on.

The new Parliament meeting is visible from outside to be in the construction stage, with the surrounding areas bathed in dusts all the times. However, a giant statue of the national emblem had been installed on the roof of the new Parliament building. The construction work of the new Parliament building had also been delayed on accounts of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic when the migrant workers had to leave the national capital in a large number following the announcement of the national lockdown.

The Central Vista project is also being carried out in and around the India Gate area, while a renovated Kartavya Path was unveiled with much fanfare by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kartavya Path is now a destination for hosting of cultural programmes. However, a number of new buildings, which are part of the Central Vista project, are still at the stage of construction.

President as part of convention addresses the joint session of the two Houses of Parliament on the first day of the sitting in the new-year, which happens to be during the Budget session. It will be the first address of President Murmu to the joint session of the two Houses of Parliament after her election last year. She will address the joint session of the two Houses, which is held in the Central Hall, on January 31, while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the annual Budget on February 1.
