“New Bengal, Bhagwa Bengal,” says BJP leader as over 90% turnout recorded; TMC alleges intimidation

Kolkata, April 30, 2026 — The high-profile Bhabanipur constituency in Kolkata witnessed intense political action on April 29, 2026, as voters turned out in large numbers for what many described as the “mother of all electoral battles.”

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari struck a confident note, declaring, “Yeh naya Bengal hai… Bhagwa Bengal hai,” while asserting that the electorate had decisively turned against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Adhikari, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, claimed he would win Bhabanipur by a margin of at least 30,000 votes. He also predicted a sweeping victory for the party across the state, saying BJP would secure “not less than 180 seats,” well above the majority mark of 148 in the West Bengal Assembly.

According to Adhikari, voter turnout crossed 90%, which he described as a record for the constituency. The ECINet app had earlier indicated turnout above 91%, reflecting strong voter participation.

The BJP leader also alleged attempts at booth disruption by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers, claiming that “fake voting” and intimidation tactics were deployed in certain wards. He praised IPS officer Charan Singh Meena for taking action against alleged miscreants.

“Mamata Banerjee knows not a single vote is coming her way,” Adhikari told reporters. “Goonda der kemon daman kortey hoe …. (How to handle goondaism was displayed by IPS special observer Charan Singh Meena),” Suvendu told journalists later in the day for taking befitting actions against TMC miscreants in a booth in Bhabanipur.

Banerjee, however, countered these claims, accusing the BJP of trying to influence the election using central forces and administrative pressure.

“Central forces are supposed to guard the country’s borders, but instead they are working for a particular party,” she said.

Symbolism and Political Messaging

Adhikari’s remarks carried strong ideological undertones. Referring to Swami Vivekananda, he said Bengal’s identity aligns with a broader cultural and political shift.

In a notable comment, he described Union Home Minister Amit Shah as “my guardian,” signalling alignment with the BJP’s central leadership.

Adhikari’s confidence is rooted partly in his 2021 victory over Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, a closely fought contest that significantly boosted his political stature.

On-Ground Optics and Campaign Tone

In a lighter yet symbolic moment, Adhikari briefly entered a TMC booth office during polling, shared a cold drink, and exchanged greetings with party workers—an image that stood in contrast to the otherwise heated contest.

The campaign, however, remained sharply polarised, with both sides trading allegations of intimidation and electoral malpractice.

Bigger Political Implications

Analysts suggest that a BJP victory in West Bengal could have far-reaching implications, potentially reshaping the state’s political landscape much like the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election did in North India.

Such an outcome may also intensify ideological debates around governance models and political identity, especially in the context of the BJP’s expanding footprint.

What Lies Ahead

With polling concluded, attention now turns to counting day. While BJP leaders project a decisive mandate, opposition parties remain cautious, pointing to the unpredictable nature of West Bengal’s electoral dynamics.

The Bhabanipur result, in particular, is expected to be a key indicator of the broader political direction of the state.
