With 118 MPs backing the notice and NDA united on the floor, Congress’s no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla collapses in din and disorder — as Amit Shah dismantles Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary credibility with attendance data.

New Delhi, March 11, 2026 — The Lok Sabha on Wednesday decisively rejected a Congress-sponsored motion of no confidence against Speaker Om Birla, dealing the Opposition a significant political setback and handing the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance a clean floor victory.

BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was presiding over the House, put the motion to a voice vote. NDA members rejected it loudly and emphatically, raising their hands in opposition, while Congress and allied opposition MPs descended into the well of the House raising anti-government slogans — rendering their own cause inaudible in the din.

Congress mover Jawed Mohammed, who had initiated the no-confidence notice, was given an opportunity to present his case. His remarks, however, could not be heard amid the uproar.

The No-Confidence Notice: What the Opposition Alleged

The opposition, led by Congress, had submitted the no-confidence notice in February 2026, signed by 118 MPs. The notice accused Kota MP and incumbent Speaker Om Birla of acting in a partisan manner, with Congress claiming specific instances of biased conduct against opposition members and allegedly false allegations being levelled at them from the Chair.

The Chair, however, ruled that any remarks made by Home Minister Amit Shah deemed objectionable would be expunged from the official proceedings record.

Amit Shah Turns Tables: Rahul Gandhi’s Attendance Record in the Dock

Home Minister Amit Shah used the debate to launch a stinging counter-attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, citing a damning comparative attendance record across three Lok Sabha terms.

“In the 17th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 51% against a national average of 66%. In the 16th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 52% against a national average of 80%. In the 15th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 43% against a national average of 76%,” Shah told the House.

Shah also took aim at Gandhi’s overseas travel during critical parliamentary sessions. “Every time there is a Budget Session or some important Bills — Rahul Gandhi has to go abroad. If you are in Germany and Singapore, how can you speak in Parliament? And then he complains that he was not given time by the Speaker,” Shah said.

The Home Minister further accused the opposition of systematically undermining parliamentary traditions and stated unequivocally that Om Birla should continue as Speaker for the remainder of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Congress Caught in the Crossfire

Congress MP K C Venugopal attempted to redirect the debate, interrupting Shah’s speech to question whether the discussion had strayed from its original purpose. “Is this debate about the no-confidence motion against the Speaker or about the Leader of Opposition?” Venugopal demanded, as tensions inside the chamber continued to escalate.

The intervention did little to stem the tide. With opposition members confined to the well and the NDA bloc firmly united, the motion failed to gain any traction — marking what analysts are calling yet another costly miscalculation by a fractured opposition.

The episode underscores the continued inability of the INDIA bloc to translate procedural manoeuvres into effective parliamentary pressure — and hands the BJP a ready-made narrative heading into the remainder of the Budget Session.

  1. The article is both partisan & tendentious
Opposition had clearly stated that they had moved the impeachment motion as a mark of protest against the partisan conduct unworthy of the speaker’s position of the parliament
This speaker has lowered the dignity of the house he holds by his blatant partisan conduct besides a body language which betrays his opposition to the opposition
In any normal democracy , he would have been asked to quit by his party, which knows no democratic convention & follows none
The article should have mentioned about the attendance of the sitting PM since 12 years & even today he was on jaunt to Kerala
