New Delhi, February 6: Union Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Thursday told the Rajya Sabha that the government will launch a crackdown against illegal immigrations to the US. The minister gave a statement in the Rajya Sabha amid uproar in parliament over the deportation of Indians from the US under “inhuman conditions”.
“We are in discussions with the US government to ensure that mistreatment is meted out to the Indian who are being deported,” said Jaishankar in the Rajya Sabha.
The minister also said that the government will elicit information from the deported Indians about the agents who helped them reach the US illegally. “We will launch a crackdown against illegal immigrations,” said Jaishankar.
The Opposition MPs grilled the minister over the mistreatment of the deported Indian. “They were chained and handcuffed while there were 19 women and children also. Why were they being deported in military plane,” asked Tiruchi Silva in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the “US is in the process of deporting 7.25 lakh Indians. What has the government done to address the issue? Has the government given consular access to such Indians?”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh said in the Rajya Sabha that the deported Indian in Haryana were carried in prisoners’ vans. “There were 35 people from Gujarat. The American military plane landed on Indian soil. The government didn’t even know,” said Singh in the Rajya Sabha.
The Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale said that the undocumented Indians in 2011 in the US was 4.25 lakh which shot up to 7.25 lakh in 2021. “Why was the Indian government not able to bring the deported Indians honourably? If Columbia could bring back their citizens by sending planes, what stopped Indian from bringing back own citizens,” asked Gokhale.

The TMC MP also mentioned that “Russia has not yet repatriated Indians who have been forced to fight against Ukraine in the ongoing war. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the request for the repatriation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but his request has not been acceded to.”
Jaishankar in his reply to concerns of MPs said that the consular access is provided when requests are made. He said that the government was aware 104 deportees while clearance was given for the military plane to land in India. Jaishankar assured that the government will look into the issue if the deported Indians hold properties in the US.
