India’s Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami wins praise for his fluent Mandarin as he showcases the Indian Embassy in Beijing and highlights the deep cultural connections between India and China.

New Delhi, May 30, 2026 — India’s newly appointed Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has drawn attention on Chinese social media after appearing in a video in fluent Mandarin, introducing the Indian Embassy in Beijing and extending an invitation to Chinese citizens to engage with India’s cultural and diplomatic outreach.

In the video, Doraiswami greets Chinese audiences in Mandarin and offers a guided tour of the Indian Embassy complex located in Beijing’s Liangmaqiao diplomatic district. Speaking directly to viewers, he highlights the services offered by the embassy, including cultural, consular and trade-related activities.

The ambassador uses the opportunity to underscore the civilisational links between India and China, describing both countries as among the world’s oldest and most distinctive cultures. During the tour, he points to a statue of Nobel laureate and poet Rabindranath Tagore, recalling the Indian thinker’s visit to China more than a century ago and his message about the cultural awakening of Asia.

Doraiswami notes that India and China, despite their differences, share rich traditions and diverse cultural heritage. He speaks about the unique contributions of both countries in music, theatre, visual arts and cuisine, portraying them as ancient civilizations with enduring cultural influence.

The video also showcases the embassy’s cultural facilities, where activities related to Indian dance, yoga and other aspects of Indian culture are conducted. Display areas featuring Indian handicrafts and traditional artworks are highlighted as examples of the country’s artistic diversity.

Inviting Chinese citizens to visit the embassy and participate in its cultural programmes, Doraiswami encourages viewers to follow the mission’s social media platforms and engage with events organised by the embassy.

The outreach effort is being seen as an attempt to strengthen people-to-people connections and cultural understanding at a time when both countries are seeking to stabilise and improve bilateral engagement. The ambassador concludes the video by expressing hope that he will personally welcome many of the viewers to future events at the Indian Embassy in Beijing.
