Chennai, May 10 — In a ceremony that blended the theatrical with the constitutional, C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister on Sunday. The oath ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. With Vijay at the helms, the TVK ushered in the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in the Dravidian heartland in approximately 60 years.
The moment was as much a rupture in political history as it was a personal triumph for the 51-year-old actor, Vijay had floated his party barely two years ago.
The Oath — With a Cinematic Twist
Even before he had finished taking his oath, Vijay stamped his personality on the proceedings. Immediately after the Governor began administering the oath, Vijay went off-script, saying: “I will work honestly and dedicatedly to fulfil my responsibilities. I will adhere to the rule of law, remove hate, and work honestly for all sections of the people” — raising his right hand and clenching his fist as party workers erupted in joy.
The Governor intervened and asked him to read the official oath from the paper provided. It was unscripted, unrehearsed, and quintessentially Vijay.
The Speech: Power, Accountability, A Dig at the Past
In his maiden address, Vijay wasted no time laying down the political ground rules. He declared that a new era committed to “real secularism and social justice” had begun, and firmly asserted that there would be no power centres other than him — a pointed reference to the shadow governance that critics associated with the previous DMK and AIADMK regimes. The promise of transparency was reinforced by his cabinet colleagues: Aadhav Arjuna said that TVK would provide transparent governance and work for all, calling it “a people’s victory, particularly for Tamil Nadu’s women and youth.”
The Cabinet: Inner Circle, New Faces
The nine-member cabinet includes N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, Dr KG Arunraj, KA Sengottaiyan, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr TK Prabhu and Selvi S Keerthana. TVK stalwarts Arjuna, Anand, Nirmal Kumar, Arunraj and Sengottaiyan — all considered Vijay’s core team — took oath as ministers, while Dr TK Prabhu and S Keerthana brought fresh faces into the mix. Notably, all the ministers wore shirts and trousers, departing from the white dhoti and shirt that has defined Tamil Nadu’s political dress code for decades.
The Sidelight Everyone Will Remember
Vijay wrapped up the hour-long event by clicking a selfie with those on the stage, including Rahul Gandhi and his cabinet colleagues, as the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium transformed into a sea of excitement — a moment that went viral almost instantly and captured the mood of a government that wears its pop-culture identity without apology.
The ceremony was attended by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. His presence on stage underscored both the national significance of Tamil Nadu’s political shift and the coalition arithmetic that got Vijay there. The government was formed after extensive discussions with smaller parties intent on keeping both the BJP and AIADMK out of the state’s power structure. The selfie was not just a photo — it was coalition politics distilled into a single frame.
