With over 4,000 processions planned, all BJP candidates on the streets, and a key Rajbanshi leader switching sides in Cooch Behar, West Bengal’s Ram Navami has become the opening act of the state’s most politically charged election season in years.

Kolkata, March 26, 2026 — West Bengal is bracing for its largest-ever Ram Navami celebrations, with the saffron ecosystem planning more than 4,000 processions and pujas across the state over two days — at least 1,000 more than last year — as the BJP seeks to leverage the festival ahead of a crucial assembly election.

Ram Navami will be observed on March 26 and 27, with events spanning all three organisational sectors of the RSS and its affiliates in Bengal: Uttar Banga (north), Madhya Banga (central), and Dakshin Banga (south).

“We expect around 1,000 more such programmes compared to last year,” said a source within the saffron ecosystem. “The total number of events, including processions and Ram pujas, should cross 4,000 this year.”

Scale of Last Year’s Celebrations

Last year, approximately 3,200 processions and pujas were organised across Bengal. In north Bengal, Ram Navami was observed at 925 locations, drawing around 23 lakh participants. Central Bengal saw events at 1,150 places with approximately 9.5 lakh attendees, while south Bengal recorded 1,575 events with around 14 lakh participants.

This year, those numbers are expected to rise sharply.

Elections in the Frame

The BJP has made no secret of the electoral calculation underlying the surge. All BJP candidates have been directed to participate in processions within their respective constituencies.

“Yes, the election is one of the major factors that will escalate the number of processions in the state,” a party source said.

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari went further: “Two crore Hindus will take to the streets to celebrate Ram Navami this year.”

Senior BJP leaders believe this year’s festival could witness an unprecedented level of Hindu consolidation in Bengal — a process they say has been accelerated by the political turmoil in neighbouring Bangladesh.

“The Bangladesh developments and growing anti-incumbency will be enough to consolidate Hindu votes at a high level,” said a senior BJP leader in Kolkata.

Although neither the BJP nor the RSS officially organises Ram Navami events, prominent figures from the saffron camp actively participate under the banner of Ram Navami Udjapan Committees. The RSS, VHP, and Hindu Jagaran Manch play key organisational roles.

The RSS, however, has been careful to distance the festival from electoral politics. “Ram Navami has now turned into a social and religious programme like Durga Puja or other festivals. It is not connected with elections,” said Jisnu Basu, the RSS’s Purba Kshetra Prachar Pramukh.

Since the BJP emerged as Bengal’s principal opposition party, Ram Navami has become an increasingly significant date in the state’s political calendar. The Trinamool Congress has also organised similar rallies in recent years — though it is the BJP that has largely reaped the political dividends.
