Bangladesh Moves to Repatriate Two Osman Hadi Murder Suspects Arrested by West Bengal Police STF

By NIRENDRA DEV

Kolkata, March 9, 2026 — The West Bengal Police Special Task Force has arrested the prime accused in the killing of former Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi — nabbing Faisal Karim Masud, 37, and an alleged associate Alamgir Hossain, 34, from the border area of Bongaon in West Bengal. Bangladesh has now activated diplomatic channels to bring the two suspects back to Dhaka.

IGP Confirms Repatriation Process Underway

Speaking at a press conference at the Police Headquarters Media Centre in Dhaka, newly appointed Bangladesh Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir confirmed that the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs was actively working to repatriate the two accused.

“They would be brought back shortly,” the IGP told reporters, adding that diplomatic channels were being used to facilitate the repatriation. Faisal, a resident of Patuakhali, and Alamgir, from Dhaka, were arrested from the Bongaon border area, according to sources familiar with the operation.

Teen Gangs, Political Patrons and the Limits of Police Power

The press conference also addressed the contentious question of political patronage behind teen gang violence in Bangladesh — a subject on which IGP Fakir was candid about institutional constraints.

“Political parties are the main driving force in the country’s politics. They decide in parliament where the country will go, how the police will function, and how society will operate,” he said. On whether police could act against political parties harbouring criminals, Fakir drew a pointed analogy: “Can you take action against your father?”

He was clear, however, that criminal conduct would not be shielded by political affiliation. “If they engage in criminal activities or break the law, we will bring them under the law,” he said.

The IGP added that law enforcement agencies have already prepared a list of terrorists and listed criminals, and would soon launch operations against them.

Mob Violence, Opportunistic Crime and a Warning to Citizens

On the growing problem of mob violence, Fakir said police have concrete plans to tackle incidents and have already taken action in several cases. He described a pattern in which criminal elements exploit disorder for their own ends. “Many people involved in mob attacks are linked to drugs, looting, and other crimes,” he said. “Some groups exploit chaotic situations to carry out assaults and theft, while others help spread violence more widely.” Police, he added, are compiling a list of those responsible.

The IGP issued a firm warning against vigilante action. “Banned organisations or other groups will not be allowed to create disorder on the streets under any pretext,” he said, emphasising that police would uphold the rule of law and ensure justice.

Eid Security Measures in Place

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, Fakir confirmed that steps have already been taken to ensure safe travel for home-bound citizens across roads, highways, waterways, and railways.

The arrests in West Bengal mark a significant development in the Osman Hadi murder investigation — and the speed with which Dhaka has moved diplomatically to secure the suspects’ return signals the political sensitivity of the case in Bangladesh.
