New Delhi, December 23: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a recall of the order of the education department of the state government to ban use of Hijab in classrooms of educational institutions. The ban on the use of Hijab in education institutions in Karnataka is pending before the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court.

The withdrawal of the ban on wearing Hijab in the educational institutions was expected after the Congress came to power in Karnataka. The Basavaraj Baommai-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka had banned wearing of hijab in the educational institutions on the grounds that religious identification dresses wouldn’t be allowed in classrooms.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said in Mysuru on Friday: “There is no ban on Hijab anymore. The women can wear Hijab and go anywhere. I have ordered the withdrawal of the ban order on wearing Hijab.” Siddaramaiah also told the people that they can wear dress dress they like and also eat what they want.

Under the Bommai government, the activists had taken actions against meat shopkeepers also in Karnataka. The activists had also confronted the Muslim girls on college campuses flouting the Hijab ban order of the education department.

Now that the Siddaramaiah government has announced a withdrawal of the Hijab ban order, all eyes are on the Muslim reservation in Karnataka. The Bommai government had abolition of the Muslim reservation in Karnataka just a few months before the Assembly elections in May this year. The three per cent Muslim reservation was introduced in Karnataka by the previous Congress government in the state. The Muslim reservation in government jobs and educational institutionals is also in practice in Telanagana.

Political observers are claiming that the Siddaramaiah government would also order restoration of the Muslim reservation in Karnataka. It may be recalled that the BJP had made it a poll issue in the Assembly elections, saying that the party abolished Muslim reservation because the Constitution doesn’t provide for religion-based quota system. The Bommai government had argued that Karnataka had abplished Muslim reservation to give them better benefits by including them in the other backward castes category for the quota.

The Muslim activists in the meantime are demanding from the Siddaramaiah government to file a fresh affidavit before the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court on the Hijab ban issue. It may be held that the apex court had previously ruled in favour of the ban order of the state government. But the Constitution bench will examine the larger issue involved in the ban on wearing of hijab in the classrooms. It may be recalled that some of the western nations such as France have banned religious identifying dresses in classrooms.
