Delimitation in Assam reshapes constituencies as Muslim voter shift weakens Congress and strengthens BJP’s electoral position

New Delhi, May 5, 2026 — The Congress party’s electoral prospects in Assam have taken a significant hit following delimitation changes and a visible shift in minority voting patterns, according to a report published by Deccan Chronicle.
The report noted that in a highly polarised electoral environment, a section of Muslim voters—traditionally seen as a key support base for the Congress—appeared to have recalibrated their political choices. This shift, combined with the redrawing of constituency boundaries, has reduced the party’s influence in several minority-dominated seats.
“Delimitation ruined Congress prospects in Assam,” the publication reported, pointing to how the restructuring of constituencies effectively consolidated minority voters into fewer seats, thereby diluting their broader electoral impact.
The development comes as a setback for the Congress, which had hoped to regain lost ground despite internal challenges and leadership questions surrounding figures like Rahul Gandhi. The party’s struggle to rebuild trust among key communities, including Ahoms and tea tribes, has further compounded its difficulties.
In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to have consolidated its position. The leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been credited with maintaining a strong electoral machinery and expanding the party’s outreach across communities.
The Deccan Chronicle report also highlighted that alliances among opposition figures, including regional leaders, failed to translate into cohesive electoral gains. Instead, fragmentation within anti-BJP votes contributed to the ruling party’s advantage in key constituencies.
“In Upper Assam, where Congress once enjoyed a stable base, the erosion of minority support proved particularly damaging. The BJP’s ability to retain its hold in the region, coupled with opposition disunity, underscored a broader political shift underway in the state,” said the report, authored by Manoj Anand from Guwahati.
The findings suggest that delimitation has not merely redrawn electoral maps but also reshaped political arithmetic, forcing parties to rethink strategies in a rapidly evolving landscape.
As Assam’s political dynamics continue to shift, the Congress faces the challenge of rebuilding both organisational strength and voter confidence, while the BJP looks to consolidate its gains ahead of future contests.
