Cockroach Janata Party Lays Siege to Parliament, Govt Scurries for a Quick Fix

Thousands of Cockroach Janata Party activists marched towards Parliament, clashing with police amid heavy rain, as Union Minister J.P. Nadda held talks with protest representatives over demands including Sonam Wangchuk’s release and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
New Delhi, July 20, 2026 — In an extraordinary turn of events, dozens of activists reached the last barrier of parliament on Monday as the Cockroach Janata Party’s protest brought thousands of the people on the street. The police resorted to teargas, while also lathicharging the activists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre showed signs of rushing for a last-minute escape route as Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda held a 10-minute talks with the representative of the CJP at his residence. Nadda, per Sourav Das, the spokesperson of the CJP, told the activists that he would get back after an internal discussion on demands raised by the protestors.
The CJP has submitted three demands with the government — release of Sonam Wangchuk, resignation of Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, and ₹10 crore compensation to families which lost students in cases of suicides due to NEET exams.
The CJP alleged that several protestors were assaulted by the police, while they sustained injuries. Some of the protestors sustained head injuries, per footages shared by the CJP and the media outlets.
The CJP march to parliament began on Monday morning amid heavy rains, as the protestors broke through barricades at the Jantar Mantar. Hundreds of protestors were seen near parliament at places such as Rail Bhavan, Press Club of India, Rafi Marg, and Vijay Chowk.
Protestors who were chased away by the police later gathered in strength at the Connaught Place. They also gathered at the India Gate lawns.
Key gates of parliament were closed as protestors marched towards the outer walls. MPs admitted that they heard teargas being fired at the protestors.
Earlier, several political leaders called on protestors. The CJP activists, who were holding indefinite fasts, ended their hunger strike ahead of the march to parliament. Film actor Shabana Azmi, AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, independent MP Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’, and others were seen at the Jantar Mantar showing solidarity to the protestors.
