Sonam Wangchuk Offers Modi Govt an Escape Route to End the CJP Protest

The education reform activist says he will end his indefinite fast on July 20 if the Centre accepts accountability for education failures, or if political leaders assure him the issue will be raised in Parliament.

New Delhi, July 20, 2026 — Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk announced on Monday that he will end his indefinite hunger strike on July 20 only if one of three conditions is met. The low-hanging fruit on the part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government seems to be one of Wangchuk’s condition that “MPs agree to discuss” the issues raised by the supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The Monsoon session of parliament is beginning today. The CJP has a planned march to parliament.

In a climbdown on the part of Wangchuk as his fast has entered the 22^nd while he remains in the Safdarjung Hospital, he has spelt out that a promise for a discussion in parliament on issues related to education can also help him end the fast.

The government has not yet responded to the conditions of Wangchuk. But the Opposition MPs are likely to raise the issue in parliament today, and the government may also agree for a short duration discussion, per sources.

The government will heave a sigh of relief if a short-duration discussion in parliament can help in clearing the Jantar Mantar of the CJP protestors, said a senior BJP functionary.

Wangchuk linked his conditions to accountability for recent failures in India’s education system. In a handwritten note dated July 19 from Safdarjung Hospital, where he said he is under “illegal detention” with restrictions on his movement, speech and communication, Wangchuk stated his first condition that his fast would end “if the government accepts responsibility for recent failures in the education system, including examination paper leaks.”

To accept this condition, the Prime Minister will have to sack Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan. That is not forthcoming as the Prime Minister has apparently postponed the Cabinet reshuffle for a later date.

As an alternative, Wangchuk said he and the leadership of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) would end the fast if they are allowed to reach Parliament and receive assurances from Members of Parliament and leaders of various political parties that the issue of education accountability will be taken up during the Monsoon Session.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said in a social media message that a massive police barricading has been done at the Jantar Mantar. He also alleged that a mischief may be engineered to defame the CJP march to parliament.

Notably, the police don’t allow any march to parliament, and protestors are stopped at the entry of Jai Singh Road at the extreme end of Jantar Mantar Road. The police may detain protestors if they try to force their march through barricades, said sources.

His third condition states that if his health or other circumstances prevent him from travelling to Parliament, MPs and political leaders should visit him at the hospital and provide the same assurance regarding raising the issue in Parliament.

In his note, Wangchuk reiterated that his campaign is focused on securing accountability for the education system and ensuring that the issue receives formal parliamentary attention before he withdraws his protest.
