Congress Escalates Pressure on Modi Govt Over Ram Temple Donation Row

Randeep Singh Surjewala moves Rule 267 notice, alleging large-scale irregularities in Ram Temple donations and demanding accountability from the Centre and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

New Delhi, July 20, 2026 — The Congress on Monday intensified its attack on the Narendra Modi-led government over the alleged Ram Temple donation controversy, with Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala submitting a notice under Rule 267 seeking suspension of the day’s listed business to allow an immediate debate on the issue.

In the notice addressed to the Rajya Sabha Secretary-General, Surjewala urged the Chair to suspend all scheduled business and hold a discussion to “fix accountability” over what he described as alleged irregularities in donations made for the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple.

The Congress leader argued that the controversy involves not only alleged financial irregularities but also the faith of millions of devotees who contributed to the construction of the Ram Temple following the Supreme Court’s 2019 Ayodhya verdict.

He noted that the Centre constituted the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in February 2020 pursuant to the apex court’s directions.

In his motion, Surjewala listed a series of allegations, including alleged irregularities in land purchases, claims of commission payments during temple construction, questions over the accounting of donated gold, silver, jewellery and other valuables, and alleged misappropriation of cash donations. He argued that these allegations warrant a comprehensive and impartial investigation.

The Congress MP also questioned the sequence of the investigation, claiming that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted before an FIR was registered and alleging that earlier complaints dating back to 2021 had not reached a logical conclusion. He further claimed that no accountability had been fixed on the Trust or its members despite the seriousness of the allegations.

Calling the issue one of national importance, Surjewala argued that because the Trust was created by the Union government under the Supreme Court’s directions, both the Centre and the Trust must be held accountable. He urged the Rajya Sabha to hold a detailed discussion and ensure transparency in the management of donations made by devotees.

The Congress has held a nationwide pressers to raise the issue of the Ram temple donation theft. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also on an offensive against the Modi government over the allegations of theft at the Ram temple.
