Police Shift Sonam Wangchuk to Hospital as CJP Protest Faces Action

Delhi Police says the activist was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in compliance with a Delhi High Court order after his health deteriorated, while the Cockroach Janata Party alleges a forceful crackdown on the protest.

New Delhi, July 18, 2026 — Delhi Police on Saturday shifted activist Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital. On the 21^st day of the indefinite fast of Wangchuk, the police personnel in a large number arrived at the protest site. The police said that Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital in accordance with the Delhi High Court order on the monitoring of his health conditions.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) activists claimed that Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the outfit, had been detained at his Jhandewalan residence. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das posted a video message, saying that the “police forcefully took away Sonam Wangchuk.”

The police personnel in plainclothes climbed the stage on Saturday morning. They covered the stage with white sheets in an apparent bid to block the cameras from making visuals of them taking away Wangchuk.

New Delhi DCP Sachin Sharma told reporters that the police intervention was “in accordance with the orders of the High Court, and considering his health and medical condition…” “Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to an appropriate government hospital. He is currently under medical supervision,” he added.

The medical parameters of Wangchuk had deteriorated yesterday. He had lost over 9 kg of weight. His BP readings were also on the lower sides of the benchmark.

On the 19^th day of the protest, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had reached the protest venue to bring national media attention, as well as give a fresh energy to the protestors. On the 20^th day, Friday, Congress leader Pawan Khera called on Wangchuk. In the last two days, the CJP protest gained national spotlight, as concerns for health conditions of Wangchuk grew.

Manish Anand, Editor of The Raisina Hills, on July 14 had written that the government may finally intervene to end the CJP protest closer to the commencement of the Monsoon session of parliament. He had argued that the CJP protest would have derailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s agenda in parliament.

The health conditions of Wangchuk came as a convenient alibi for the police intervention. But the government had also dropped clues on Friday of an impending action, as Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha was removed from the post.
