BJP Defends Delhi SIR Notices, Cites Age Gaps and Family Data Discrepancies

B.L. Santhosh cites Election Commission data to question political opposition to SIR as more than 33 lakh Delhi voters face notices over discrepancies.

New Delhi, September 25, 2026 — The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday strongly supported notices issued by the Election Commission of India in its ongoing special intensive revision. The BJP cited statistics for key reasons for which notices have been issued, alleging that certain political parties wanted to protect ineligible voters.

BJP general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santhosh in a thread on X claimed that 6.4 per cent notices were issued in the ongoing SIR for discrepancies such as “less than nine months of differences among siblings.”

Santhosh further stated that notices have been issued accounting for a total of 2.5 per cent in which the “difference between the age of voters and their parents were more than 50 years.” He again cited that 2.3 per cent of the total notices in Delhi were sent for “difference between age of voter and grandparents being less than 40 years.”

He again stated that five per cent of the notices were sent due to “difference between voter age and parent age being less than 15 years.” There were 4.2 per cent notices on account of a parent having six or more children, he added.

“Are you wondering why so much of political storm over SIR …? These are the reasons … Which forces want these names to remain in voter list,” Santhosh asked.

He further wondered, which parties benefitted from these voter lists all these years. “Which party and family created a system which kept such names in voter list for decade? Why was SIR not held regularly all these decades,” he asked.

Santhosh is a high-ranking office bearer of the BJP. His defence of the notices sent under the ongoing SIR has come amid raging controversies surrounding report of differences within the Election Commission of India among members. In Delhi, notices under SIR were issued to high-profile persons, including the BJP veteran L.K. Advani.
