Kolkata, April 29, 2026 — West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC candidate from Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on central forces and poll observers, alleging “atrocities” during voting as the state recorded a high turnout of 78.68% by 3 PM in the second phase of Assembly elections.
“I have never seen this type of democracy,” Banerjee said, accusing CRPF personnel and central observers of beating voters, including women and children. She alleged that several party workers had been detained since Tuesday night, calling the situation a “contempt of court.”
The BJP hit back strongly. Party MLA Shankar Ghosh said the Trinamool Congress was “fearful” now that law enforcement was acting impartially. “For years, TMC manipulated the police. Now they are uneasy as the system works independently,” he said.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) had directed central forces to disperse gatherings of more than four people near polling areas and urged voters who had cast their ballots to return home. He also alleged that “infiltrators” were attempting to disrupt polling, while asserting that “Hindu voters have woken up.”
TMC leaders, however, accused the BJP of using state machinery to intimidate voters. TMC candidate Saokat Molla alleged police excesses in Bhangar, claiming that supporters were lathi-charged, homes vandalised, and several workers injured.
Amid the political slugfest, the Election Commission said repolling could be ordered in booths where EVM tampering is confirmed. The statement came after BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that party symbols were obscured with tape in certain booths in Falta, demanding fresh polling.
Violence was reported from multiple districts. In Nadia, a BJP polling agent was injured in an alleged attack by TMC workers. Separately, a BJP candidate—mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim—also claimed she was targeted by TMC supporters.
Polling across 142 constituencies in seven districts has witnessed heavy participation, reflecting high stakes in this crucial phase. With both sides trading serious allegations, the Election Commission faces a critical test in ensuring free and fair polls.
