“As a prime minister, Israel has been attacked by Iran. He has to react,” Yariv Oppenheimer told Al Jazeera, adding that he expects Israeli military action against Iranian targets in the coming hours.

New Delhi, June 8, 2026 — Former Peace Now secretary-general and Israeli political activist Yariv Oppenheimer has warned that Iran’s latest missile attack on Israel could provide Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with an opportunity to expand military operations, potentially pushing the region toward a broader conflict.

Speaking to Al Jazeera as reports emerged of Iranian missiles being launched toward northern Israel, Oppenheimer said initial indications suggested that Israel’s air defence systems had successfully intercepted the incoming projectiles.

“There is no reason not to believe it,” he said, noting that any successful strike causing casualties would quickly become public knowledge. However, he cautioned that the situation remained fluid and that the missile barrage could be only the beginning of a larger escalation.

According to Oppenheimer, Netanyahu is unlikely to refrain from responding forcefully. He argued that the attack aligns with the Israeli leader’s political objectives and may provide justification for renewed military action.

“In many ways, this is an opportunity for him to restart the war, what he wanted to do in the first place,” Oppenheimer told Doha-based broadcaster.

The comments came after Iranian military officials reportedly warned that further Israeli operations in southern Lebanon or Beirut’s southern suburbs would invite additional retaliation. Tehran has linked its actions to Israeli military operations targeting areas associated with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

Oppenheimer described the current situation as unprecedented, noting that direct Iranian retaliation over Israeli actions in Lebanon represents a significant shift in regional dynamics.

“We don’t remember in the history of Israel and Lebanon a situation in which Iran is retaliating about action that Israel is taking in Lebanon,” he said.

The Israeli activist also argued that the development highlights a deterioration in Israel’s strategic position rather than an improvement. He suggested that the conflict has created a new equation in which Israeli operations in Lebanon could trigger direct responses from Iran.

While acknowledging reports that US President Donald Trump had previously urged restraint regarding Israeli actions in Beirut, Oppenheimer expressed scepticism that Washington would block a military response.

“As a prime minister, Israel has been attacked by Iran. He has to react,” he told Al Jazeera, adding that he expects Israeli military action against Iranian targets in the coming hours.

Oppenheimer said the critical question is whether the latest exchange remains a limited confrontation or evolves into a broader regional war involving both countries.

“The big question here is whether it’s just a short timescale of missiles being fired on each other, or whether we are at the beginning of a much bigger war between Israel and Iran,” he told the Qatar-based broadcaster.
