According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are likely in several states, with isolated gusts touching up to 80 kmph.

New Delhi, May 30 — Abrupt weather changes brought relief from sweltering heat in parts of the country on Saturday. After storm wreaked havoc in parts of Bihar on Friday, a massive black-and-yellow dust storm swept across Rajasthan’s Churu district on Saturday, engulfing the area in dense clouds of sand and reducing visibility to near zero.

The intense storm transformed the daytime landscape as powerful winds carried large amounts of dust and sand across the region. Residents reported severely reduced visibility, with the dust-laden winds making travel difficult and disrupting normal activities. Dramatic visuals from the area showed towering walls of dust moving across the horizon, blanketing settlements and roads.

The dust storm comes amid a spell of unstable weather across large parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for thunderstorm-related activity over northwestern, eastern and central India, as well as parts of Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining regions.

According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are likely in several states, with isolated gusts touching up to 80 kmph. The warning covers Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand.

The weather agency has also warned of hailstorm activity at one or two places across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for Saurashtra and Kutch in Gujarat, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The IMD further forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of southern India.

On the heatwave front, warnings remain in force for Telangana, Vidarbha and isolated areas of Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to continue along the Konkan and Goa coast through Sunday, according to the IMD.
