Thirumavalavan says VCK’s support is unconditional and intended solely to help Vijay form government and block any possibility of central intervention.

Chennai, May 9, 2026 — Thol. Thirumavalavan, chief of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), on Saturday announced that his party would extend outside support to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led alliance to help it form the government in Tamil Nadu.
Addressing the media after consultations with senior party leaders, including MP Ravikumar and MLA Sinthanai Selvan, Thirumavalavan said the decision was taken primarily to prevent any constitutional crisis that could lead to the imposition of President’s Rule in the state.
“We do not want the current political crisis in Tamil Nadu to be used as a reason to bring in President’s Rule,” he said.
The VCK leader noted that despite winning 108 seats, TVK was facing difficulty in forming the government on its own in the 234-member Assembly. He said it was important that parties supporting democratic and secular politics should not become obstacles to Vijay assuming office.
“Our position should not become a barrier to Vijay forming the government,” Thirumavalavan stated.
He clarified that the VCK’s support was limited strictly to enabling government formation and did not come with any conditions attached. “We are extending support from outside. There are no other conditions,” he said.
Thirumavalavan also revealed that the VCK had aligned its position with that of Left parties, which had earlier indicated support for the TVK-led formation to ensure political stability in the state.
The announcement significantly strengthens Vijay’s post-poll coalition arithmetic, helping the alliance comfortably cross the majority mark in the Assembly. Political observers believe the VCK’s decision could also help consolidate Dalit and progressive support behind the incoming administration.
The move marks another major step in the rapid political realignment unfolding in Tamil Nadu after the assembly election verdict delivered a fractured mandate but placed Vijay’s TVK at the centre of government formation.
