Spain Records Over 5,000 Heat Deaths, a New Summer Record

New Delhi, September 4, 2026 — Spain registered more than 5,000 heat-related deaths from June to August 2026, according to data from a public health institute released this week — a record since the country began compiling these statistics in 2015, and a stark marker of a summer that Europe’s own climate monitor has already flagged as historically extreme.
Euronews reported Spain has recorded 5,232 deaths attributable to high temperatures so far in 2026, based on provisional data released Monday by the Daily Mortality Monitoring system (MoMo), run by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) — the highest figure since the system began tracking heat mortality in 2015. Of that total, 2,147 deaths occurred in August alone, according to Euronews.
The Local Spain reported the specific June-to-August tally stood at 5,111 heat-related deaths, surpassing the previous high of 4,652 recorded for the same three-month period in 2022. That figure represents a sharp year-on-year escalation: The outlet showed the estimate up from 3,651 fatalities during the same period in 2025, and 1,977 during the same three months in 2024 — meaning the toll has climbed for three consecutive years and roughly tripled since 2024.
Who Is Dying
The toll is overwhelmingly concentrated among Spain’s oldest residents. Euronews reported that of the 5,232 deaths estimated for 2026, 5,048 — an overwhelming majority — occurred among people aged over 65. People over 85 specifically accounted for 62% of the total, with 3,256 deaths in that age group alone. It also reported that 60% of the deaths recorded were among women.
Most heat-related excess deaths are driven by heart attacks and strokes brought on by the physical strain of the body attempting to keep its internal temperature stable — a mechanism that becomes progressively more dangerous with age, as the cardiovascular system’s ability to regulate body heat efficiently declines.
How the Figures Are Calculated
It’s worth understanding what these numbers do and don’t claim to show. The Local Spain explained that the MoMo system does not count deaths where heat has been individually certified as the specific cause of death on a death certificate.
Instead, it produces statistical estimates of mortality attributable to elevated temperatures, generated by comparing actual nationwide daily mortality data against historical trends and incorporating meteorological data from Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, to assess the likely role temperature played in mortality spikes above the expected baseline.
That methodology means the figures represent a rigorous epidemiological estimate rather than a direct medical count — the standard approach used across public health surveillance for heat mortality, precisely because heat rarely appears as the sole, isolated cause of death on an individual certificate, even when it is the decisive factor tipping a vulnerable person’s health into crisis.
Why This Could Be Earth’s Warmest August Yet — And It’s Not Close
The Broader European and Meteorological Context
Spain’s toll didn’t occur in isolation. A string of exceptional summer heatwaves has been linked to thousands of excess deaths across the continent this year, with Europe’s climate monitor reporting the hottest June-July period on record for western Europe.
July 2026 was the warmest in the historical meteorological series, tied with 2022, while June ranked as the second warmest since records began.
Coverage from earlier in the summer illustrated how quickly the toll accumulated during Spain’s most intense heat episodes: a single 16-day heatwave running from August 3 to 18 alone was linked to 1,149 excess deaths, according to an earlier Carlos III Health Institute estimate reported at the time — underscoring how concentrated bursts of extreme heat, rather than a steady summer-long baseline, are driving much of the overall total.
Still Below the Historic Benchmark — For Now
Despite setting a record for the MoMo era, even at 5,232 deaths, the 2026 figures do not reach the estimated toll of Spain’s catastrophic 2003 heatwave, when roughly 13,000 deaths nationwide were attributed to extreme heat — a crisis significant enough that it prompted Spain’s Health Ministry to launch its national heat-health action plan, the same framework whose current iteration underpins this year’s ongoing monitoring and response efforts.
With official heat mortality tracking in Spain now in its second decade, the pattern emerging from the data is difficult to read as anything other than an escalating trend: three consecutive years of rising heat-related deaths, a toll that has nearly tripled since 2024, and a summer of 2026 that has already claimed more lives to heat than any year since consistent tracking began.
For a country whose elderly population continues to grow, and whose summers have trended hotter in successive years according to its own national meteorological agency, this year’s record — however methodologically careful the underlying estimate — represents a marker public health officials and policymakers are likely to treat as a floor to plan around, not a ceiling.
