The new Bihar Bhavan Canteen has opened in New Delhi, offering authentic Bihari cuisine including Litti Chokha, Sattu dishes and Kadhi-Bhaat. The initiative aims to showcase Bihar’s rich culinary heritage to Delhi-NCR residents.
New Delhi, August 4, 2026 —Bihar’s rich culinary heritage has found a new address in the national capital with the inauguration of the New Bihar Bhavan Canteen, an initiative aimed at offering authentic Bihari cuisine to visitors, the large migrant community from the state, and food lovers across Delhi-NCR.
The canteen was inaugurated last week by Manoj Kumar Singh, Resident Commissioner, Bihar Bhavan, in the presence of officials and staff of Bihar Bhavan.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh said the new facility would provide guests, members of the Bihari diaspora and residents of Delhi-NCR with a single destination to savour Bihar’s traditional and popular dishes. He said the objective was not merely to serve food but also to introduce Bihar’s rich culinary traditions and cultural heritage to a wider audience in the national capital.
The canteen’s menu features iconic Bihari delicacies such as Litti Chokha, Sattu-based dishes, Kadhi-Bhaat, Dal-Bhaat, seasonal vegetables, and several other traditional preparations. The breakfast service will be available from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., while lunch and dinner will be served from 12 noon to 10 p.m.
The opening comes at a time when Bihari cuisine is steadily gaining popularity beyond the state’s borders. Once largely associated with Bihar’s migrant population, dishes such as Litti Chokha and Sattu Paratha have increasingly found a place on restaurant menus, food festivals and home kitchens across Delhi-NCR, attracting patrons from diverse communities.
Delhi and the National Capital Region are home to one of the largest populations of people from Bihar outside the state. Over the decades, Biharis have made significant contributions to the region’s economy and society, working in sectors ranging from government services, education and healthcare to construction, transport, hospitality, business and the corporate sector. Their growing economic and cultural influence has also helped popularise Bihar’s festivals, folk traditions and cuisine among non-Bihari residents.
Officials believe the Bihar Bhavan Canteen will not only cater to nostalgic tastes of the state’s diaspora but also emerge as a culinary destination where Delhiites can experience the authentic flavours of Bihar under one roof, further strengthening the state’s cultural footprint in the national capital.
