New Delhi, August 5, 2026 — A 41-year-old immigrant from El Salvador has died while in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), becoming the 23rd detainee to die in the agency’s custody so far in 2026, according to a report by CBS News.

The deceased, identified as Edwin Lopez Cornejo, suffered what ICE described as a medical emergency on Saturday while being held at the Delaney Hall Detention Center in New Jersey.

In a statement cited by CBS News, ICE said the circumstances surrounding Cornejo’s death remain under investigation. The agency also stated that he had entered the United States illegally on two occasions.

The latest death comes amid growing scrutiny of ICE detention facilities as the number of migrant detainees continues to rise under US President Donald Trump’s intensified deportation campaign.

According to CBS News, 31 detainees died in ICE custody in 2025, the highest annual total recorded in two decades. With 23 deaths already reported this year, 2026 could surpass that figure if the current trend continues.

The increase in deaths has coincided with a significant expansion of the federal immigration detention system. ICE was holding approximately 68,000 people awaiting deportation proceedings over the weekend, reflecting one of the largest detention populations in the agency’s history.

Immigration lawyers, civil rights groups and advocacy organisations have repeatedly raised concerns about conditions inside ICE detention centres, alleging inadequate medical care, overcrowding and delays in treatment for detainees with serious health conditions.

Advocates argue that these systemic shortcomings have contributed to a rising number of in-custody deaths and have called for greater transparency and independent oversight of detention facilities.

ICE has consistently rejected allegations of medical neglect or unsafe detention conditions. The agency maintains that it provides detainees with a “safe, secure and humane environment” and says medical services are available throughout its detention network.

The investigation into Cornejo’s death is ongoing, and officials have not yet released additional details regarding the cause of the reported medical emergency.

The latest incident is expected to intensify the debate over immigration enforcement policies and detention standards in the United States, particularly as the Trump administration continues to expand deportation operations and detention capacity.
