Fundamental Question

The Telegraph in its Editorial has dwelt upon the issue of the voting rights of the citizens, claiming that the Supreme Court in its recent ruling has wondered if it should be a fundamental right. The Kolkata-based daily has referred to past observations of the learned judges of the apex court on ensuring the status of a fundamental right to voting, which currently is part of Article 326 of the Constitution. It spotlighted the issue on the canvasses of “exclusion and divisiveness”, as well as conditions for making informed choice.

It’s worthwhile to note that Parliament has lagged in granting rights to the citizens for which the Supreme Court appears to be the only hope such as privacy. Right to vote is incumbent on right to know candidates and their patrons, as well as a sense of security to walk into polling booths to cast votes.

Chipping Quad

The Tribune in its Editorial has examined India’s achievements in attracting investments for chip making amid the growing chorus for de-coupling among the western powers with China. The Chandigarh-based daily has stated that India’s ambition to become a global hub of semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development is no longer a mere pipe dream, with collaboration with fellow Quad members Japan, the US and Australia. The daily gave an account of a slew of investment proposals, while adding that Lam Research has promised to train 60,000 Indian engineers to accelerate India’s semiconductor education and workforce development goals.

There is no dearth of investment proposals and intent, but tardy execution on ground grounds all such ambitions. Even after one year of an Israeli semiconductor manufacturing investment proposal in Karnataka, there are hardly any signs visible on the ground.

Earth Moves

The Indian Express in its Editorial has given accounts of the fans of pop star Taylor Swift making earth move, as her Eras tour in Seattle is said to have registered a 2.3 magnitude earthquake on seismometers. The Noida-based said that this is not the first instance of fans making “earth move”, while adding that the pop star’s Era tour has given a boost to urban transport system, as well as the economy.

Pop stars have the powers to deliver instant catharsis, which is much needed for a healthy society. Also, the power of creativity is infectious, for the economy too gains from innovations.
