Democracy Drill

The Asian Age has counselled ministers in the Narendra Modi government to stop behaving like headless chickens to any remarks made by offices of foreign ministries of other countries. In its Editorial on the issue of the Modi ministers raising bile in their utterances over the statement of the German foreign ministry spokesperson, the daily sought to educate the BJP talking guns that it’s normal for them to make such facetious comments.

The daily also sought refresh memories of the ministers, saying that even Modi had made called for adhering to democratic norms when Donald Trump’s followers had laid siege to the Capitol Hill. The daily at the same time admonished Congress leader Digvijaya Singh’s jubilation at the remarks of the German foreign ministry spokesperson.

Indeed, the people are the best custodian of Indian democracy. The chest beating by the Modi ministers and the BJP on external interference is surely an insult to the people’s might to protect democracy. Senile Congress leaders such as Digvijaya Singh, who has been a disgrace to his party also, must have retired from politics long ago.

Tailing Trump

The Hindu has warned in its Editorial that the indictment of former President of the US Donald Trump may come as a blowback to the Democrats a year ahead of the elections. The daily has argued that the polarization may be a natural after effect of the indictment.

Trump had been investigated by the justice department for the same charges, of paying off a porn star to keep mum over an extra-marital encounter, said the daily, adding that the former president has been indicted of misdemenour and indicting him for felony is still work in the progress.

It’s yet to be seen if Trump is proved guilty of misappropriating election funds, which according the American laws, must be spent in a transparent manner and for the stated purposes. Trump’s indictment will certainly raise poll temperature in the US at a time when the incumbent Joe Biden is struggling in his foreign policy with Ukraine War fixation.

G20 Goal

On the unveiling of the new foreign trade policy, which aims for $2 trillion exports by 20230, The Pioneer has said that hard work on the ground is need, for merchandise exports remain subdued with drive predictably coming from the services, which grew by about 25 per cent.

The daily has taken note of the good intentions stated in the trade policy – to facilitate and expedite the process. But the daily suggested that the government contribution in boosting trade is not that visible because IT firms, driving the services sector, are in their own league, free of the babus.

Indian foreign policy needs realignment with trade goals, as had been done by China, which in a span of two decades exports over 40 per cent of goods imported by the Latin American countries. Do we have the wherewithal of China?
